My dad came across this page devoted to trip preparation for a simpson desert crossing. It's got some interesting suggestions in it (for a pajero driver).

I'm curious on the thoughts of others about fuel requirements. The 150 series obviously already has 150L on board and since mine is a diesel, I thought that would be enough but this guy suggests between 150 and 200. I guess it probably depends on the tracks we take but any thoughts from those who've been before would be welcomed.

I did east to west across the top, down to the southern end then back to Birdsville in 09 in a 90 series auto v6, we took 150lts in the tanks and 60 lts in jerry cans. We emptied 2 jerry cans in, kept one as a back up and when we got to Birdsville put 135lts in the tank, therefore around 175lts.

East to west used way more fuel than the other way, I can only get about 125lts out of my 150 before it shows empty and off road this equates to about 750 ks in the west to east scenario. When we were there the clay pans were dry and the sand soft. The sand on the dunes gets a lot softer as it heats up so travel earlier in the morning is the easiest.

Well I used 116L going East to West, Birdsville to My Dare via the Knolls Track and rigroad south to Purnie Bore. 2008 D4D with 18 - 20psi in the tyres. The other Prados used similar. The highest was 121 L as far as I remember. I also used 50L Water for two people but was happy to carry the 90L just in case. Temps ranged from 6C overnight to 43 in the day.

As has been said consumption varies greatly depending on conditions and driving style/ability.
I used 120 litres for 600 km in an east to west crossing in '08 in my V6 90 series.
I would carry at least 1 x 20litre jerry as a back up giving you 170 litres in case of back tracking or doing a couple of detours.
Much better to arrive at the other side with excess than running out.

I used about 160 l in my V6 2006 VX this year with a lot of side tracks etc. For the D4D 150 carry the extra jerry can and simply empty it into the main tank as soon as you have used up 20 l worth. This way you are only "carrying" the extra for about a day or 130 odd km Neil.

I sold my camper trailer on the weekend. That's going to pay for my lift and better suspension, bash plates and dual battery system. I even got permission to leave the wife and kids behind and just take dad so I'm definitely in now.

I don't know much about the area so can't help much with route planning but if there's anything else I can do to help organise, I'm keen as mustard!

If I were able to make it I would have both a sat phone and a HF, if I can't make it and you need a sat phone I may be able to help out with that.

I'd be keen for a sticker. Not so fussed on the shirt but that's just because I'm huge and I doubt one will fit. Others may be interested.

If no one has a sat phone, we can rent one from the mt date hotel and drop it off in birdsville. If we all kicked in, it'd be pretty cheap insurance.
