  • Hi Tiny,

Next time i 'll travel remote i will be hiring a defibrillator, when i went thru the Simpson in 2010 it might have helped a person in our party who died around a campfire 25 km west of Poppell Corner from a heart attack, 3 + hrs of CPR before we had to call it quits as there was no help coming for another 15 hrs.

If not, Are people interested in Chipping In $40.00 / Vehicle and I will supply a Kit.
This way everyone has access to the kit, but I retain ownership, and restock it.

The Kit is $470.00 and covers everthing needed - http://www.firstaidkitsaustralia.com...tem.asp?id=476

And who is a Qualified First Aider? If no one, then it will be a case of All care No Responsability.

Also, just an update - I will now be Tenting (No trailer) and will have Rear Air Locker fitted, with Lift kit (OME) + Snorkel fitted and my Father will have his L/C Cab Chassis as well.

Before you buy one, check eBay to make sure you can't get it cheaper there. This one is only $420 delivered and looks the same at first glance:

As for first aid kits, I've got myself a pretty good one (http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com.au/vi...id=83105612173) and I've added to it to set it up for remote touring (a heap of extra bandages, burnaid and betadine and a sampling of most over the counter drugs for anything we're likely to be afflicted with). As most people have their own kits with varying degrees of stuff in them, I reckon we'll have most situations covered and should be able to combine kits if anything serious comes up. Happy to hear other people's thoughts though.

I've also just re-done my first aid training including CPR and Defib training (a defibrillator would be nice to have with us but probably out of our price range). As with all first aid though, we'll do our best within our training to help but as you say, all care but no responsibility.

      Tiny
Tiny that looks like the one I have also and will be getting the mother inlaw to get some more stuff for me she's a nurse.

Defib machine how much would that be to hire .

Yeah, after doing my training and seeing what they can do, it'd certainly be handy. I haven't been able to find anyone who hires them out though.

          • I have the 4WD Survival kit with a snake bite kit added in from this mob http://www.adelaidesafety.com.au/Fir...ortable/pl.php . There's enough room left in the bag that I will also bring along a bunch of common stuff like anti-hystamine, aspirine, etc etc etc.

Is it worth me setting up a google docs shareable spreadsheet so that we can list out what we have / will bring so that we can co-ordinate what we're taking and avoid everyone bringing the same things (i.e. we might be able to get away with every second person bringing spare oil and every other person bringing coolant?) It would be a shame for someone to blow a few hundred on a massive first aid kit if between us all we have it covered. Will also help with things like the spare tyre discussion?

            • Hi All,

What are the common Engine items to fail in the outback?

Mine will be due for a 120k Major Service before I go, which covers everything + Valve Clearance Check (when Cold - Needs to be left overnight). Will also get Timing Belt done, and all new filters inc Cabin.

I will also have with me a full set of Belts (Fan & Alt), Filters (Oil, Cabin, Fuel inc Sub Tank Filter) and Hoses (top and Bottom), all from Repco (to keep the cost down)
What isn't used, will be used on my next service.

              All items suit KDJ120 - 1KD-FTV Engine.

Nothing common on prados, far from it.
The biggest let down would be getting it serviced and them stuffing something up.
So whatever you do, you don't get your service the few days or week before the trip, you do it at least a month before, this will give you time to see if they stuffed something. Also time to fix it & re-check etc.

Starter motors & alternators can fail anytime, this could stuff your trip if it was to happen.
If its an auto, if your starter motors doesn't work, then you ain't going anywhere.

Many engines will flatten the battery within an hour or so if the alternator isnt charging.
There are some vehicles around that will run for hundreds of kilometres on a good battery.
I've just ordered an alternator, eBay cheapy, but $215 to the door is cheap insurance.
I've seen starters for $129 ish, I might carry one of the too.....
ID RECOMMEND ANYONE WITH AN AUTO, THAT iS TRAVELLING FAR FROM HOME & TOWN TO CARRY A SPARE starter.

Yes water pumps fail too but,,,,, usually a slow leak you can top up, till you get back to replace it.

Check and replace if necessary belts & hoses, that means heater hoses too, but generally belts & hoses on your vehicle are very reliable.

                • Hi All,

With about 8 weeks to go before departure, I would like to finish our planning, so we know what is happening.

What are the plans for those who wish to continue on (As I believe there are a few of us) - ie, not stop for the Birsdsville Races (Friday 6th, and Saturday 7th Sept)?

Do we just free camp somewhere and wait for those who are going to the Races? Or what do we do?

                  Can someone please advise.

Stuart you don't want to stay in birdsville at all . You don't have to go to the races .
I will get a plan up but after Birdsville it was off to Innamincka , Dig Tree so you could fi d somewhere down the track to camp and wait .

Mark has been down the bore track and around that area so I will have a chat and get some sort of plan up .

                    Anders

Has anyone that is coming got a sat phone if not I am happy to hire from Mount Dare .

                    • Hi Anders,

FYI, We aren't the other ones, not wanting to stay at Birdsville for the Races.
Some of the others, i believe from other posts, have their families with them, and have already stated that they don't intend to stay.

Maybe you should ask what peoples thoughts are, to see how many are Staying in Birdsville vs those who are not wanting to stay.

As for the Sat. Phone, I am trying to get one from my local 4WD Club (The Jackaroo 4WD of Victoria.)
It is currently out on loan to a Club member, but I have requested it for August/Sept..

Will let you know when I have an answer.
