Hi folks,
I'm currently planning a trip from Brisbane to Kangaroo island heading through Mt Isa, Alice Springs, Uluru, Coober Pedy, Lake Eye (Maybe) then down to Adelaide and onto Kangaroo Island. Then spend some time with family down there and head back through the great ocean road, Melbourne and Sydney. Roughly a 10,000km round trip!
I will try my best to document the journey on here! Really looking forward to it. I Inherited my late dad's 2004 Prado Grande diesel last year and he always to wanted to travel Australia in it, but in the 11 odd years we have owned it, its only been up to Rockhampton and back. He never got the chance to check out the Australian outback and properly enjoy it. It has travelled 125,000km so far. So looking to make it a bit more reliable, buy some camping gear and take it around the country for maybe a month.
Looking to depart in two weeks, so my question is, what are the must-see spots along the way? And good camp sites you would recommend?
Also as a first time traveller through Oz in a 4wd, what are some of the must have accessories?
So far i have:
- A set of Ko2's
- Thumper compressor / patch kit.
- Tent/sleeping bag
- LED spot lights
- Factory sovereign bull bar
And Vehicle prep wise:
I have always changed oil and filter every 5,000km myself on this car. So i'm planning on doing the following before i head out:
- Oil / filter change
- Front / Rear Diff oil change
- Gearbox / transfer case oil change
- Provent 200 catch can and EGR block off / remove intake manifold and clean it
- DBA T3 front discs and Bendix 4wd pads all around.
- Brake fluid flush
- Prop shaft greasing
- Figure out why the A/C is switching on/off and getting warm. (have been searching the forum and found some info, will try solve it on the weekend!)
Is there anything i'm missing and you would recommend ?
This is it, as of this morning with FJ cruiser wheels and Ko2's. The +15mm offset really fills out the guards with 265/70/17! Really happy with the way it looks!

Thanks in advance !
Cheers,
Shane
