  • Another Simpson Crossing - July 2018

We're taking our V6 150 across the Simpson this July School holidays. There's 1 other Amarok confirmed for the convoy and hopefully another V6 150 coming as well.

It'll be a West -> East crossing so we can have a go at Big Red (it's closed at the start of the holidays for the Big Red Bash, so we need to get there near the end).

Leaving from Adelaide the rough plan at this stage is to head through Oonadatta, fuel up at Mt Dare, spend a bit of time at Dalhousie springs, 3-4 days crossing on the QAA line, Big Red, Birdsville and the Strzelecki track on the way home. My wife has done a similar crossing before but it'll be my first.

I'm planning on hiring a satellite phone for the convoy at Mt Dare and dropping it back at Birdsville. I can borrow an EPIRB from an uncle who has a spare one - he carries 2 after getting stuck without one in the APY lands, waiting well over a week before being rescued and drinking from a stock trough when he ran out of water!

We're pretty well setup for the trip, I only need to buy some jerry cans and I'd like a spare wheel bag to keep the rubbish outside. The suspension has < 10,000kms on it and other than a steering column issue that I'm sorting out soon the car is in good health.

We'll be in swags and travelling relatively light but will still be close to GVM at the start of the crossing with the extra fuel and water on board.

I'm planning on bringing 2 x 20L jerry cans for 190L total. At ~20L/100km average on dunes this should be good for 800kms, which will get us across fairly comfortably. Does anyone think this won't be enough?

I towed a soft floor CT west to east with a 120 series V6 5 speed auto. 2 adults and 2 kids. 180L Mt Dare to the bottom of Big Red where I tipped in a 20L jerry can for the run into Birdsville. Sounds like you have a good trip mapped out.
I will be in Birdsville and at Big Red in late June and early July for the Big Red Run so will miss you by about 2 weeks.

Plenty of fuel. In my 120 V6 Auto I didn't use any of my jerrie's but the 120 had 180 litres in the tanks so 2 should be plenty especially as several of you have V6s and can share if it gets tight close to Birdsville. About 18l/100km may be closer to the mark as the first 200 km? I'm you will do a lot better than that.

150 V6 petrol east to west last year averaged around 20 Ltr per 100klm. Put the Jerrys in as soon as you have space to and get the weight off the roof. I filled the Prado and 2 Jerry's (190 litres) at My Dare and had over 40 litres in the tank at Birdsville.

Thanks for all the replies, and nice photos whynot12.

Sounds like the 2 jerries will be perfect, maybe even a little more than I need but it's always good to be prepared.

If you have a PLB (not an EPIRB, which must be registered to a vehicle/boat), I wouldn't worry about the Sat phone. Despite the remoteness, there will be lots of company around. If you break something, word can get to Mt Dare or Birdsville pretty quick. For medical emergencies, a PLB will get help to you just a fast, if not faster, than a Sat Phone. Update the PLB registration details with information about your trip - who's going, dates and vehicles.

Last year the Amarok on our trip did it with ease and on a single tank. Enjoy your trip.

              Hi Malloc
Sounds like a great adventure that you are planning there, (just a little envious) ha ha.
              Are you based in Adelaide?
I've got a couple of Scepter jerry cans (Red ones) that have only been used for petrol.
They have done some touring on our camper trailer and in my opinion are the only way to go.
The key is to get them emptied into the vehicle tank as soon as convenient or practical. this gets the weight of fuel off of the rack etc.
If you would like to borrow these for your trip just say the word.
              Cheers

Thanks for the offer Troy, I am based in Adelaide but unfortunately I bought two yesterday! Supercheap had a special on the poly proquip cans, and the quality seemed decent to me.
