  • Uluru and Alice Springs from Melbourne

    Hello everyone,

We are looking at heading to Uluru and Alice springs in August and wanted some ideas on what to do and route to follow.

We will be leaving from Melbourne and want to do both east and west of Alice Springs.

We have 4 weeks off to complete the trip

    Happy for thoughts and ideas

    Thanks

    Jeff

Go via Wentworth, Broken Hill, Tibooburra, Innamincka, Birdsville, Boulia, East Macdonnells, Alice, West Macdonnells, Kings Canyon, Uluru, then back via Cooper Pedy or even Oodnadatta, William Creek, Maree then south. This would be a great trip, I have done most of it but from Sydney.

If leaving from Sydney what do you recommend K & M - also how modified would your truck need to be for your route? Are you towing a camper/camping or staying in accommodation along the way

Well having done all of this in Peugeot 504s and Commodores' you don't need any modifications but if you are driven to do some, get all terrain tyres and run them at less than 30 psi on the dirt. Enjoy the trip.

          Sounds great https://goo.gl/maps/2NRiSyH639MNUvEq6

          I have done a slightly shorter https://goo.gl/maps/AfNyD6cS4Dygzhiw7

I have done all of this in an unmodified Prado 155SX (Three door) towing a Mars hard floor campertrailer. Standard tyres and no bullbar but we only drive after dawn and before dusk.

Melbourne to Flinders Ranges bypassing Mildura and Renmark.

Stayed at Waikeirie and too one of the free punts across the Murry River.

A few days at Wilpena and then out via the Brachna Gorge (magnificent)

Up to Maree with a stop at the Farina railhead and a snack from the underground bakery at the right time of year.

Along the Oodnadatta track with a peek into Lake Eyre if there is any water.

William Creek, Oodnadatta, Dalhousie, Mt Dare and then up into the East Macdonalds.

Alice then to Glenn Helen and the West Macdonalds, Mereenie loop to Kings Canyon (stay at King Creek Station)

Uluru and the Olgas and then head south and look at
          Painted Desert,

          Coober Pedy

          Woomera

Port Pirie and take the Steam Train to Quorn and back.

Whereever you go you will have a great trip.
