  • Cape York Planning

    Hi all,
Planning my first trip to Cape York and the Old Tele Track this year. Will likely be in September and may very well be solo vehicle but will have an ultimate camper trailer in tow.
I have two equipment Queries that I would really appreciate some thoughts on: breathers and winch.
Breathers - I’m tracking the 4 breather extensions that come into the engine bay as factory standard, the rear diff hasn’t been extended yet so I plan to do that. Question I have is whether the other 4 need to be extended further towards the bonnet? I know some of the creek crossings are very deep, is it worth the extra work or just get all the oils changed once we get back to Cairns?
Also, I have rated recovery points and snatch straps but the bull bar is alloy and not winch compatible so adding a winch will get a bit expensive. Is a winch a must travelling solo or are there enough other groups travelling at that time who would be able to support you?

    Many thanks in advance

    Some notes:

    1. if you have a 2018 or later Prado you'll have headlight ECUs mounted underneath each of the headlight assemblies. There was a report from a Prado driver that did the Tele track in circa mid 2018. After a crossing the headlights failed. Replacement headlight assemblies plus ECUs >$5K, sans warranty. May last year I did a 15 day trip across a remote track in the northern Kimberley. Knowing I'd likely have the same issue I sprayed the connectors between the headlights and ECUs with copious quantities of WD40 and hoped for the best. After a score of river crossings, two up to the top of the bullbar, all ECUs survived.

    2. if you get a winch make certain that it will work in water. On that Kimberley trip we had winches on 4 of 9 vehicles fail during our 1st decent water crossing on the 1st day.

    3. diff breather extenders are a waste of money IMHO. Prados have pressure release valves, they don't 'breathe', and all but one are mounted high up in the engine compartment. Your rear axle housing may inhale some water (like mine has), its no big deal. Change the rear diff oil on the next service. There is a video on Youtube of a 79 series that had diff breather extenders, however their extension tubes got ripped off (maybe water drag), their diffs then filled with water anyway, which they drained when they got home.

You won’t “need” a winch. It’ll be late in the season & the exits of the creek crossings will normally be dry enough to drive out of. A couple may be deeply rutted, if you can’t get up in that instance someone will come along with a snatch to pull you out. It’ll be later in the season, but still plenty of people driving the OTT that can help when they’re passing through. Diff breathers are not a necessity. If you’re concerned, just change oils after you return home. Most people never keep cars long enough for tiny bits of water in diffs to be of any concern.
