Nice, I would love to throw a shed load of gauges in the Playdo, but like Jo, Catherine wouldn't like it one bit.
I want one that says BOOST again :twisted:2003 V6 GXL, Mickey Thompson MTZ's, Safari Snorkel, ARB Winch Bar, OME Suspension 2" lift, GME TX3420

Great stuff Matt!
Will be doing this job on my new rig when it arrives.
What did it cost you? Also, any comparison to what a 'pro' would have charged to do the install?
This should come standard with a Toyota towbar!!
Jim2008 D4D GXL, Charcoal Grey, Sov Bullbar, winch, towbar, ARB Touring Roof Rack, Gunyah Side Awning, BFG AT Tyres, 2" Lift with King Springs, Bilsteins and Poly Airbags, Piranha Dual Battery Sys, GME TX3400 UHF, Lightforce XGT's, Black Widow rear draws, cargo barrier and shelf. I'm sure there's more ...

Neat..
Maybe when more interest is generated in these items and they are readily available for the 120 we will see gauge relocation number 3 ?

Finally got my act together and sorted out the auto trans temp gauge ... thanks Matt for all your help sorting out the bits and pieces.
Trimmed down the T piece, tapped a thread into it, fitted the sender unit, cut the hose and fitted the sender inline.
Mounted the gauge and started wiring
Back under the bonnet to finish wiring this end
The gauge is smoke faced ... so when the ignition is switched on it lights up
Its been a cold day and I've only been able to get the temp up to 65.
Be interesting to see how it performs next weekend when its towing the camper up into the Dwellingup hills.
Cheers

Re: D.I.Y Autometer AutoTrans Temp gauge install (new mount)
Guys,
I am planning to do the same for my Hilux as I have a transmission oil cooler installed when I had the idiot warning light come on a few years back. After installing the cooler it has never come on again which is good.
However, my trans oil cooler is quite big at 15.5" x 10" x 0.75" (Permacool #1014). I am having reservations whether the oil cooler is simply too big and will not allow the ATF fluid to reach the optimum temperature. Hence the plan to install a temperature gauge.
My research finds that the optimum temperature varies from a) between 79 to 107 degrees Celsius OR b) 71 to 93 degrees Celsius. From what I have gathered the A340F temperature sensor idiot light will come on at 110 degrees Celsius.
I notice that you all install the sender before the cooler. That would mean the highest temperature.
After doing some research on the WWW, looks like there are 4 ways to install the sender:
1) Before cooler - highest temperature
2)After the cooler - lowest temperature
3) At the ATF oil pan itself - average temperature (fluid going out to the radiator and then cooler and then returning to the pan)
4) At the original Toyota temperature sensor? (not sure if it will affect the original sensor?)
Toyota's temperature sensor for the auto A340F gearbox is just above the pan.
Would appreciate some input and comments.Cheers
Brendon

Re: D.I.Y Autometer AutoTrans Temp gauge install (new mount)
Originally posted by pradogxlv6Here's a idea I had, to rig up a transmission temperature gauge in the Prado. Pretty basic to do, fun bit is chasing the tee piece and drilling/tapping to suit the temp sender. I used a Autometer temp gauge, as they are very accurate and have a good name.
Here's the way to do it..
Buy this gauge. Comes with a sender unit, mounting pod is extra.
Make this tee piece. 1/2inch three way from Pirtek. Shorten it and tap it 1/8inch NPT to hold the sender in place. Picks up the trans oil as it goes into the cooler unit (hot oil in, cool oil out).
Now cut the input hose into the top of the oil cooler and fit the sender like this.
Wire up the sender with a signal wire going back into the cab, to the gauge.
Earth the sender back to the battery. Make sure ya don't earth the sender, just the body. I used a hose clamp to secure the wire to the copper tee piece like this.
Here's where I put the gauge in the cabin.
Closer view of the autometer temp gauge. Pretty happy now !!.
Tested the tranny by stalling it out in reverse in the shed. Gauge showed about 100 degrees. Went for a drive. 19 degrees outside and raining, transmission sat on 80 degrees about town and dropped to 75 degrees out on the road.
There ya go, PM for any questions..
Have fun :!: :!: :!: :!:
Hey guys
For not many dollars more you could fit a EMS (engine monitoring system) that will alarm if temps go over a preset limit rather than relying on watching a gauge while your driving like this one I have in my 120;
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6631
Mine being a manual is setup to monitor transfer case temp but you could fit the sender in the convertor outlet line on the auto transmission..

finally got around to mounting our autometer transmission temp gauge.
used the same sensor mounting method as chippy (in the above pics).
