  • Rear work light with dual switching - help please!

    G'day all,

Currently I'Ve got a rear mount LED light on a kaymar pole behind the spare, this runs directly off my aux battery that's in the rear of the car to run fridge etc... I want to arrange this so I can either switch it on at the rear or the dash, despite searching I can't find something that answer this. I did see a thread that talks about using a remote but I'm not sure about this...

I've come up with a wiring diagram using an eBay toyota dash switch and relay to run the light from the dash, but maintaining the switch on the pole from the rear as well. My wiring diagram won't win any awards but should get the point across. Would love to hear thoughts on the proposal and happy to hear suggestions on better options...

Yep, that will work fine. Other option is to get a on/off/on switch and wire the common as the out wire, one pin as constant power and the other as reverse lights. Let's you use the camp light as a switchable reverse light (great if going for a night 4wd trip).

I want to do something similar with my rear light, currently wired to the reverse lights but I'm worried about the legalities of it wired that way as it can be inadvertently switched on or left on while travelling and blinding following traffic. Must be a way around it.

So what conditions do you want it to work? You want it to work with reverse lights but no other time while the engine is running? And work while the engine isn't running off a switch? You would need two relays for that, one normally closed relay wired up to be controlled with an ignition power source (closed when ignition off, open when ignition on) to supply power to the "constant power" pin as described above. All easy

This is the house wiring version where you can switch on or off at either switch.

Add a relay and fuse between the switches and the light.

Your diagram is exactly how I would do it.

Just realised I should probably run a 3amp fuse on the positive to the dash switch, this is a 3m cable run or so and should be protected. Also recon I could just run both positive feeds off the same 10amp fuse in the rear, I've got a slot in my terminal block that i could run both from. To be on the safe side I will run a 7amp fuse there.
