  • Motor replacement under warranty – long, short or rebuild?

    G’day all,

6 weeks ago I destroyed my second D4D motor. The first motor went, under warranty, at 60K, I was told faulty injectors caused a piston to burn out. The second went at 120K due to a cracked piston.

I have Toyota extended warranty and my local dealer lodged a claim and advised me that a short motor was approved and was on order from Japan.

Today I have been told that the new short motor is actually a new block with new pistons and the dealer will be rebuilding the motor using mostly original parts.

    What are your opinions?

Is a rebuilt motor just as good (or better?) than a factory built short motor?

Would you accept a rebuilt motor when you were told that you would be getting a new short motor?

Tomorrow I’ll be ringing the Toyota extended warranty people for their views.

Any thoughts on other actions I could take?

    Cheers,

    Lee.

    Not worth it.
    Short is $4000
    Long is 8000

Long saves a lot of labour time.
    Save gaskets
Comes with injectors & pipes over $2000.00 worth & you will need them.
    Comes with water pump.

Imo Get it sorted, or your relying on them getting work right. Long motor is much easier.

    Shit luck!

Edit, a new short motor is a new motor.
You reuse the head upwards. So its not a full rebuild, but it's much better than a full rebuild IMO.
I trust Toyota Japan on quality o.e build.

I would not be rebuilding the bottom end I'd want a factory assembled unit

        Thanks #### and Phs,

My thoughts are pretty much the same as yours - I was looking for back-up :-)

My major issue is now that if I stop the dealer doing the rebuild and insist on a short motor (as per their original commitment) I could be waiting another 6 weeks!

        Cheers,

        Lee.
