  • Window Tint

I just had a thought about my window tint that has been ordered on my new VX Prado.

With the already factory tint would the addition of window film make the car illegal? I have seen some photos of the standard factory tinted glass and I am wondering if I really need the addition of window tint, what do you all think?

    Yo Mav.

I assume you're doing the tint through Toyota??

I know with my UV window tint, I'm getting a certificate to carry around in the glove box in case the law takes exception. Apparently it is the darkest tint allowed under Australian law. My dealer told me that Toyota cannot release an illegal car from the yard without very serious consequences, which makes complete sense. Therefore I doubt your tint will end up being illegal.

The number of times I've ended up sunburnt after a trip up the coast in summer ain't funny. Therefore dark UV tint for me is well worth it.

I think that the darkness of legal tiniting varies from state to state (and territory  ). Qld allows more and darker tinting than Tassie does for obvious reasons.

Some states don't allow the front windows to be done.

A trip to franchised fitter would probably clear up what you are allowed to do in your area.

I enquired in Perth and was asked straight away if I wanted the darkest LEGAL tint.

After ordering my new VX yesterday I was offered extra "toyota" tinting but only the front side windows were mentioned. I suspect that there is at least one state in australia that does not allow those windows to be tinted.

So to make it easy on the production line tinting is left off the front side windows with the option to add it from your dealer if your states laws allow it. I also suspect that the current 'privacy glass' is very close to the legal limit.

Tinting can be added to cargo sections of vehicles where no seating is fitted. Like a stationwagon for example. Special exemption is required in writting from the RTA in NSW for this (not sure about other states). But if like the Prado seating is fitted or could be fitted, the answer is no.

          Hoppy50,

Have you thought about getting an ARB bar instead.

I have and that was my prefered choice. BUT

The compromise to me purchasing this vehicle is that my wife will be using it as a city commuter to work each day and unfortunately the Toyota bar is lighter and looks less threatening etc. I know some people wont understand that way of thinking but I had to compromise somewhere and that was one thing. Along with the fact we had to get the VX due to seat height adjustment function. My wife is quite petite. I would have prefered the GX or GXL with an option pack.

I plan to change jobs soon and when that happens I will ditch my company falcon and take over the Prado. Then watch out .... lift kit, drawer system, etc

I've just had 20% put on all my windows as I wanted the back area as dark as possible. I carry computer equipment around from time to time and preferred if prying eyes could see nothing.

So its very hard to see into everything behind the front seats. Its quite dark on the front windows as well.

Looks good. Got mine done by the Tint Professor.

Did the Tint Professor tell you it is legal? I work at a television station and carry camera equipment in the back of a Falcon stationwagon. To get the tint "very dark" we had to get special exemption from the RTA in NSW and have to carry a letter from them in the glovebox to show the police it has been authorised, if I ever get pulled up on it.

Tried to merge two window tinting subjects, couldn't work it.. sorry
Okay thanks for trying, may as well just close this thread and let the original be the one to use as it has what I was asking about in it.

There appears to be no way to merge the threads, Aaron as an admin can possibly do it, but not sure.

I will lock this one to avoid covering the same twice in both threads two times, does that make sense? :P
