  • Rhino Tray/basket for a 120 Grande

    I have been looking at getting a Rhino basket for the Grande and have seen heaps.

    I don't want to go longer than 1.5M as I want to be able to get out of the moon roof should the need ever exist.

    What is confusing me is the website says the 1010 x 1500 is not compatible (see http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCa...TRAY_35_1.aspx )

    Has anyone fitted this baby to the standard toyota (aka Rhino) sports rails?

    Should be fine as it says that it is suitable for fitting onto 2 bars. 1536mm is the centre distance between the front and rear roof mounting points. So the 1500mm length will still be within the plastic caps of the north south rails on the Grande and shouldn't block the moonroof.

      I've got the same exact tray on a 120 Series GXL, mounted onto two Rhino Aero Bars. The bars themselves are mounted at the front and middle mounting points.

      In order for you to be able to keep the sun-roof area clear you'd have to use the rear and middle mounting points on the Prado and I think they might be too close together to offer enough stability...

          Hutch, not sure of the terminology?

          North south bars? Does that means the front to rear bars bolted to the Prado? and

          HD I assume is heavy duty. I suspect not much difference except loading weight?

          I guess I should clarify that while not preferred, I dont mind the aero Rhino cross bars which I think are the same as the ones I have

            Looks compatible to me, there is an optional fitting kit "SK24 Alloy Tray Fitting kit to fit Alloy Trays to Aero/Sportz bar. Fit kit will fit the following alloy trays: AT1210 & AT1510"

              Rob, I had a mate who had a 1500x1010 fitted to a Grande (two actually as he traded his 05 in on an 09 instead of going for a 150 but has finally rightsized to a 200 Sahara). Never had any problems with his fitted and his was fitted to his 2005 Grande he had the standard north south rails with two heavy durty cross rails and then the tray mounted to this. He was with us when we did our desert trip across the Simpson a few years back. No problems with the tray or mounting over corugations. Can get some photos to you of how it was mounted if you PM me your email.

                North South bars are the standard bars that you get with the Grande. These have three mounting points.

                Cross Bars or East West bars are mounted onto the North South bars to actually achive something as the North South bars are somewhat on the useless side as there is no support so either purchase the required number of cross bars which increases the height of the roof tray OR remove the north south bars and just install a standard set of Aero style or Heavy Durty racks to cover the load.

                HD = Heavy Durty

                  Rob - the rhino platform 1528x1236 (platform 42100) is recommended for the Triton, Rodeo & Hilux, but is the same internal width as the 1928x1236 (42102) which is recommended for the prado. So, it is quite likely that the 42100 will fit the prado and will leave room for the 'Sun' roof. The beauty of this platform is you can remove your north/south rails and buy two sets of roof mount feet. With the platform installed on these roof mounts you probably wouldn't be any higher than the north south rails that you have on now, meaning you don't need to take it off all the time and you can fit into the car park in town (I think you said you can get in with the north south rails fitted??). If it doesn't work, there's no reason why you can't get the 42102 and cut the length down. It all depends on whether you want to waste time taking it on and off all the time like you do now.

                    The north south bars are the factory ones, STD on the grande, the hd bars are the square tube rhino bars versus the sports ones, not sure if you can put a rack on the aero bars. Have look at some of my Fraser trip reports it has photos of the rack on the car.
