  • Buying a Warn XD9000 direct from USA

Hi, Im just about to purchase a warn XD9000 winch from the winchdepot.com in the USA because it seems to be a fair bit cheaper than getting one from ARB, but im wondering if anyone here has done so and if it fitted all OK or if the USA winches are different in any way from the ones Warn supply ARB with?

The picture of the XD9000 winch on winchdepot looks different from the picture of the XD9000 on the ARB site but the specs are the same!!!

I will be fitting it to an ARB delux bullbar.

    Cheers,
    Tei.

      Hi Mick,

I spoke to a guy from winch depot and he quoted me an extra $400 for the freight coming to a total of $1460.00

I didn't even think about import duty! I'll ring customs tomorrow and ask about import tax.

I believe customs charge it on arrival of the goods in Australia. I've imported a lot of stuff but always avoided the $1000 thresh hold were you have to pay duty.
I'll look into it tomorrow. Winch is a good deal and very tempting.

They can hit you up for up to 20% duty + 10% GST and thats on the declared value INCLUSIVE of shipping for anything over $1000.
Customs in Australia charges these fees and has to be paid before release of goods.

well if thats the case it will end up costing slightly more!!! Maybe if I ask them to sell me the winch for $999.00 instead of $1063.00 and add the $64.00 ontop of postage so that way everyones a winner.

Im not in a mad rush and our dollar keeps getting stronger so it might pay to hold off for a couple of months.

            Thanks Marc & Mick.

              Hi mate
The shipping is included in the calculation, so in your scenario above you would be stitched up for a total value of $1063!
              Cheers

If the winch is made in the US then I was under the impression that the duty doesn't apply due to the free trade agreement, so only gst is applicable?
Do warn still make em in the states, or china now?

I have imported numerous American made (and other countries) items valued at more than 1k and have always been stung with duty and GST.

Unfortunately the term "free trade", what it implies and the reality, is not even close :-(

Bottom line is, if its declared total value is more than 1k, regardless where it comes from, then you will pay.

Probably a quick call to the ATO or Customs would be a good idea.

Can't you just ask the WinchDepot to declare the total sale to be $999, including shipping? I'm pretty sure that customs aren't going to go through your bank account to check how much it actually was.....

Customs are cluey about camera gear now, especially those coming from HK. Don't think they're up to speed on winch value.

ok I just spoke customs and they informed me that if the goods are over $1000.00 you must pay %5 import duty tax and
%10 GST and if they are sus on an item they will investigate. The sender must put a copy if the invoice on the outside of the package and the cost of posting is not included in the taxable price.

Ill ring winch depot tomorrow and see if they they will sell me one for $999.00!!!!!

I just rand them also and got a different story.
Things have changed in the last 6 months?
The winch duty is 5% of the value.
The GST is 10% of the total of the declared value + duty +shipping and insurance costs

                          Good luck with it.
Let us know how you go.

Maybe you should check out the pdf's on this customs page: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page6016.asp. Depending on what you are importing there are obviously concessions on the duty payable on goods manufactured and originating in the US, however it is up to the importer to apply for these concessions so you might be doing yourself out of some cash needlessly.

I recently imported three tyres from the US (BFG's made in the US), the total value, including shipping, came to a bit over $1000, but wasn't requested to pay any GST or duty.

Unfortunately things Ive imported did not get any concessions, bugger!
Im not an importer as such, I, like most people occasionally just buy something from OS.
Mostly musical instruments, new and second hand.
Went through hoops trying to get concessions because they were all for personal use but to no avail, they didnt want to know.
Anything over a grand and I paid a total of about 30% extra in customs and GST.
Mind you, I must admit, that a friend of mine has imported things on numerous occasions and hasnt been queried at all.
Also, I think if your a primary producer youll pay nothing in a lot of cases.
Obviously there are many different rates and it also appears that who you deal with on the day has great influence.
All I can say is, expect the worst and you wont be disappointed, you might even be pleasantly surprised :-)
