I have gone with the Rackmaster from opposite lock, it has plenty of all purposes attachments, different lengths 1.6 - 1.8 - 2m. I rate it but its a little $$$. its worth having a look at.

I have an ARB touring rack with roof top tent. its sturdy but no room for a tyre with the tent on. one thing i have noticed is the noise when going over 80 in the cab. i had an ARB tradesman rack on a hilux also and found that to be excellent, it was quiet, sturdy, and can fit long stuff up top as it has no front or back only the side rails.07 D4D Man, Arb Bar, Warn winch, OME 2inch, Snorkel, IPF's, dual Batts, Cargo barrier, MTR's, 60L engel, ARB touringroof rack and tent, front and rear air lockers.

How does everyone find the wind noise of roof trays at highway speeds? The Rhino Racks alloy tray have a kinda built in wind deflector. Do different tray types make a difference to noise?

Byrnsie,
I gotta say that the Rhino isn't the quietest of racks on the highway. However, it is not objectionably loud.
When I open the sunroof, there is plenty of wind roar - and it gives you an idea of how much it really upsets the airflow over the car and helps murder fuel consumption.
Having said that, I leave the racks on permanently, as I need the roof space, since all three rows of seating inside are occupied by the four rug rats.
As far as racks go, I'm really happy with them - only weigh about 14 kilos and strong as hell.

You don't need a roof rack if are planning on just carrying the tyre carcas for second spare. Just srap it onto the spare on the rear door...
I got Rhino Bars and rhino tray... Rhino bars are enougth to carry second
spare... Alloy racks are lighter than steel, so you get more carrying capacity..

I dont like the rear door thing on my last trip across the desert (8,500k) the back door has dropped a little and now needs adjusting and the only change is a new set of BFG tyres. I would carry your spare on the roof.
I have tradesman roof bars purchased from toyota (probably rino with a toyota sticker) and a aluminium rack purchased from ralleyspeed about 7 yrs ago. had to modify it for the 120 ( no gutters ) I just bolt it down to the tradesman bars, simple. the bars go on every time I go away and as you can see by the pic it is full.
I had a waterproof roof bag made to suit me, I carry a 30 second tent 2.1 mtrs long. a couple of milk crates with oil filters ect. camp oven, chairs air mattress sleeping bags, clothing bags was always for 4 ppl, so a lot of the bulk for a trip goes on the roof, i am very happy with this system.
I might be happier if I get permission from she who must be obeyed to buy a off road camper trailer ( and i have been trying)Spara

Hi There
I have a 07 D4D Prado with the now standard rails onthe roof.
I too am looking for a good rack for the roof (easily removable too) for a tent and other gear.
What are the recommendations out there for the rack?
It is recomended that i remove the existing rails for something more sturdy or can i keep them on to be used with the rack ??
Thanks !!
