Jacks

I'm heading bush in a couple of weeks and I'm interested in what jacks everyone carries for offroad work. I assume most just use the factory one in the city. Chippy mentioned using a heavier duty bottle jack after throwing the toyota one in the sea :lol: . I've been looking around to find something other than the piddly little factory one, but seen nothing I have been happy with yet. And of course, can't use a highlift (without some serious mods).

Needless to say, whatever you use you need a better base!

So ... as a survey of sorts - what the general opinion?

It would appear that some others aren't happy with the factory jack. I have been more than happy with them over the years. I spent nearly three years out around Broken Hill/Menindee in the company 100 series. We carried two spares and had that many flats out there that we used to keep the three jack handle pieces screwed together behind the rear seat (later on a visit my brother welded them together).

As a base I'd carry a couple of bits of pine about 300mmx300mmx25mm thick. I used pine because that's what I could get for the right price (free). Hardwood would have been preferable, but then pine was light and there were no tears from splinters! If I could get two bits of pine under the jack, I'd do it as I spent less time winding the jack up!

The standard jack worked for me...

Same as what JTB said,
except when I go bigger distances, particularly when towing, I will have a extra very compact 3 ton square based hydraulic truck jack, bottle type. (Just in case)

About a year ago I saw a huge range of bottle jacks form small to serious truck size at a place on Gnangarra road with the planes out the front. Can't remember the name of the place but its only about 1-2 ks from Wanneroo Rd on Gnangarra Rd (right hand side). At the time I had just bought a stronger bottle jack for my Challenger from Super Crap & was spewing that I saw these just after handing over the dosh. They looked to be much better quality (some new, some 2nd hand)
