  • Re: Home made drawers under $110. Basic measurments added

Wow, what a thread, it looks like a lot of folks have all contributed some great tips which I have been trying to read my way through before starting my own set of drawers. I have PM'd a number of members and have some photos and designs that I am working on, just waiting until I have my Cargo Barrier installed which I will organise next week to finalise the measurements.

In reading through the thread I have noticed that a lot of you have mentioned that you have picked up carpet from Bunnings and various prices have been mentioned. I was passing through my local Bunnings this morning (where else does a fellow spend Saturday morning?) and I noticed that they have a range of carpet available. I assume that people are choosing the Car / Boat Cabin Carpet which is in 2m widths at about $33 per metre. They seemed to have a number of carpet types and this seemed to match what I was expecting. I snapped a quick photo on my mobile, the image is below:

Does anyone from the Brisbane Northside area have any tips on where to pick up cargo tie-downs and T-handle latches?

    Cheers, OldGreyGuy

Yes it was the boot carpet that we used from Bunnings. It seems to work under normal day to day use however if you are planning to put heavey things on there all the time you will need to get something more durable. We went on an extended trip at the start of this year and borrowed a 40L fridge to go along with our 50L and put it on the shelf and strapped it in. Where the feet of the little fridge went, it has worn through a bit (not all the way through but it is there). I would probably use the boot carpet again as for normal use it is good and matches well.

        Hi

I picked up my carpet from Bias Boating in NSW, can also get same carpet from Whitworths Marine. It is thicker than the Bunnings carpet and was $39/metre. It came in 2 metre width. I had an off cut with me when I went to Bunnings and the Bias Boating carpet was definately alot thicker but still very easy to work with providing you place timber strips over the carpet and clamp it when doing edges. Also I used lots of liquid nails as the glue as I found it stuck better on this carpet.

        Cheers

            Hi,
Here is the end result of my efforts.
I have not drilled any new holes at all just used the existing fixings eg from seat points and grab handles.

Wow - awesome set-up. Well done, they look great and I like the fact that each item can be removed seperately. Easy on your back when you have to put it back as the daily driver.

Like I said before, GREAT FORUM.

              Keep up the good work.

              Cheers

That's a real nice effort there Nick. Well done mate..

I can't believe how big this thread is and all from humble beginnings.

Well, my draws which were the ones that started this thread are still going strong and haven't missed a beat! One of the best modifications we ever did to MUMSRIG!!

                  Hey Guys

i'd just like to add my 2 bob worth, I'm currently making a set of draws for my 04 gx, I'm using 20mm square tube and it started off very light but as most things the more i add to it the heavier it gets. i picked up a great set of draw slides from Ovesco
                  http://www.ovesco.com.au/products.ph...%20Slides%20ZP

i Bought 700mm slides rated at 45kg per draw
here's a couple of pick of where i'm up to

i Grabbed a cargo barrier and cut it 2/3s of the way down and welded a new bottom rail on

i've been down the local sheet metal shop and am getting draw inserts made up using 1.2mm galv for a little cost of $40 per insert. Can't wait

next step is ply top, carpet and install will post more when i'm done

                  thanks Andres

                    Andres, nice job!

Is your cargo barrier going to be welded on? If so, might want to check you can get it into the vehicle as I know when I take mine out (the full height barrier by itself) I need to turn it sideways to get it though the door. Ofcourse you may have this all sorted already

Looks good there Andres. Interesting posters on the wall. Is that Twins?

I would suggest bolting the cargo barrier instead of welding just for a safety aspect if you need to pull it out. Not sure why I think that but that I do.

Thats going to be one set of nearly indestructible draws

Great work, Before you bolt them in, any way of getting their weight? interesting to see how much extra you are adding to the back end

                          Ok here's a little more,
I'm just lucky i'm unemployed at the moment, i picked up the draw inserts today and installed them.
Yeah i'm going to bolt the cargo barrier down, but i'm still lnot sure how to fix down the draws to the floor. any suggestions?
i was going to bolt them down using the existing mounting bolt holes

at the moment i can still lift them but only just, i'll try weight them and i'll let you know

                          cheers andres

                            Nice work Andres.

There are a number of methods of securing the draws to the floor and they are all on here. Have a look back through this post and you will see how it has been done previously. Concensus is that you do not need to drill holes in the floor or any where else for that matter. You can use existing fixings.

Here is mine made for about $300 all the fidly bits ad up plus they know how to charge for the carpet. Installed the compressor behind the fridge with a hard wired cooling fan, works a treat, installed a blue led switch on the side to operate it. Also bought a Engel slide lock after these pics they are great saves strapping down.

Very nice. It's amazing how so many people can come up with so many variations which are all top notch.

Thinking outside the square wins every time. Now I know where I am going to put my compressor as I have space behind the fridge as well.

Love this site.
