  • Re: Home made drawers under $110. Basic measurments added

I decided on something a little different. I did not need drawers as such, just a fridge frame and shelf. I have never played with wood, so I thought I would go for steel. Sorry for the lack of photos and the quality of the photos. I had to quickly use my phone because I only had access to the welder for a day.

I have a 40l Engel and a black widow fridge slide - I wanted a frame for the fridge similar to MickL's and a shelf for a drifta camp kitchen to slide underneath (thanks Whitey1).

I toyed with the idea of clamping the frame down where the rear mounted seats clamp each side. The frame is solid and unable to be taken apart and it takes the width of the rear of the Prado, and I realised that I would be unable to tilt the whole frame to get it to fit in the back, the poles that would clamp into the rear seat mounts would have to be able to hinge up out of the way so i could fit it into the back. I still may have a look at this but for the time being I cheated and now use 2 over centre latches for the front and a turnbuckle for the rear. I knew I wanted to be able to take the frame in and out quickly and this suits.

I first made a frame up for the floor of the Prado. I wanted the fridge frame to be pulled as far forward as possible so I could store my handwinch in between the fridge frame and the cargo barrier. There is just enough space for the rear door table when the door is closed.

You can see the frame here, the RHS side is for the fridge slide (This is the LHS, it is upside down here). The rear of the frame goes back to the factory ties downs, so if nothing else worked I could simply bolt it to the floor using the standard bolts. On the photo where I show the turnbuckle you can see the hole were I have done just that. This is 40mm x 3 flat bar. I had to weld corners and the lips for where the fridge slide bolts. The angle I used for the frame is 25 x 25 x 3 so I had to leave room on the frame for this each side.

I measure the angle iron and cut 45 degree wedges out of one side to make the bends, then butt welded where the cut meets. These are the two frame uprights.

This is where the fridge frame is welded to the bottom flat frame. Also with cross bars added. Also I have begun to make the shelf, this is lying on the flat frame.

This was interesting because the way I had cut wedges out of the angle and bent the right angles on the fridge frame uprights, it created nice clean round right angle corners, but the cross bar at the front had a sharp edge so I had to try weld the cross bar in and then grind a sorter edge on it.

Here is the shelf welded in. It is a bit hard to see here but the shelf goes back further that the fridge frame. The shelf goes back almost to the cargo barrier.

These are the over-centre latches on the front and the turnbuckle on the back.

You will note the space behind the rear of the fridge for the handwinch. I also thought that if I started getting cracks under my dual battery, there should be enough room here for a drycell as others have done. You can see the hole here where I bolted it to the floor using the original tiedown.

I bought 8 metres of both 25 x 25 x 3 angle and 40 x 3 flat and a sheet (2400x2400) of 25 x 25 galv mesh from Senturiun Steel on Cavan Rd (SA) - (No affiliation, they have always been good to deal with and then always an opportunity to go next door to Paramount Browns to find stuff I never knew I needed.) I had remainer of the flat bar but bugger all angle iron left. I only used half of the mesh.

There is my set up. It works for me. The room at the sides are perfect for carrying my TJM recovery kit (it is only about half the width of the ARB one), my air compressor, speedy seal kit, first aid kit, thermos etc. The shelf is a great fit for the drifta kitchen and my double burner cook top. It weighs about 25 kilos, and I can put it in and out myself, it takes less than 5 minutes to put it in and clamp it down.

    Thanks

Well a lot more than $110 but also a lot less than your might pay to buy a said custom unit....

It has been an interesting journy and I have lots of bits left over after buying / changing my mind and then doing something different... My system is not finished, but by the weekend should be close to a lock and load.

I will not post pics here.. As I have to edit every link and I am lazy, just look at my cheep and nasty efforts.

Have uploaded to the following site and if it works; you will get a slide show and a few captions..

A very interesting and informative thread. I am currently trying to fit some old Outback drawers which I took out of my old Jackaroo into the back of the new Prado. Luckily the central drawer slider box dimensions fit beautifully but I will need to make a new top and rear fascia panel for it.
I am debating the strongest way of anchoring the drawers down having concerns for it staying put when fully loaded in the roll over scenario. There appears to be a number of different methods used from my quick scan of this thread. The easiest looks like attaching to the four floor D shackles either directly or using adjustable anchor hooks. Does anybody know what these anchor points are rated at as the securing bolts look a tad skinny (5mm diam as opposed to the more solid 8mm bolts that were used on the old Jackaroo)? The second very slick idea was attaching to the 3rd row seat mounts using the rod system but this looks real fiddly to construct (my welding is very ordinary!) and how to then securely attach this rod system to the galvanized sheet metal side of the drawer section? It looks like a few people have drilled holes through the floor but I'm not very keen on this idea.
Just wondering if anybody has had any problems with their anchoring system coming unstuck or any pros and cons comments regarding anchoring the drawers in general? I may be guilty in my mind of over engineering the anchor system but as I plan to put a mattress on top and therefore not use a cargo barrier I am a bit paranoid about the whole lot coming unstuck in the worse case scenario.
Cheers and a happy NY to all PP users,
        Bryan

          g'day Brian,
I uses the original bolt holes for the tie downs but didn't use the d shackles. I took them out and bolted directly to the original thread. This has held for a bit over a year now. I am not sure if you are able to modify your draws enough to fit this but is has worked for me.

Mine are bolted through to the latch brackets on the floor that were for the 3rd row seats and it has held well and has been through some pretty ordinary terrain.

I like the way you think BBB. There's nothing wrong with over engineering and worse case scenarios. Plan for the worst and hope for the best I say. I'm amazed at what gets attached to the interiors of vehicles. Fire extinguishes for one. While fitted with the best of intentions, they're not of much use embedded in the back of your scon after a prang coz it was fitted to the wrong side of the cargo barrier. The third row seat captive nuts in the floor have to be the way to go. Either way in a good prang, you'll probably be left with nothing more than a sheet of ply left bolted to the floor.
              Cheers

You have done a great job, hopefully mine will end up somehwhere near the quality. I am putting a kitchen in one of the drawers though, drifta style. drifta.com.au This will hopefully keep the mrs happy!!

                Happy travels

Well here is my design, its not quite complete but it's mostly there!

There are a few more pics in my build up if anyones interested: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=6032&p=120375#p120375

I designed my rear cargo system around a few concepts:

                      1) To be able to install and remove the whole unit by myself
                      2) To have a fridge enclosure, but I also wanted to remove the enclosure when the fridge is not used to retain the space. This is because I didn’t want to have to pull the whole system out when carrying big items like suitcases etc
                      3) To have a fridge slide on the left and a single drawer alongside of it. This is because my other half is vertically challenged so having a fridge ontop of a drawer was just too high for her. Also I wanted it like this to give me plenty of space above the fridge to get those long items in, eg tent (which is the width of the rear of the prado)
                      4) To incorporate my AGM battery
                      5) To keep the whole system relatively low profile
                      6) To use the outside four rear seats anchor holes. For this I used 2 x M10 x 1.25 x 50mm for the two bolts closest to middle row seats, and 2 X M10 X 1.25 X 60 for the two bolt closest rear door, and
                      7) To be able to lock the fridge and drawer in place so they cant be removed.

I also liked the design on BigFella’s drawer system, so a big thanks to him for the few piccies he sent me

So here are the pics of my unit:

With the fridge and hutch in place:

                      Without the hutch in place:

This is without the void and the hutch in place to show you the design better, and also shows my battery in the rear. I will take extra precautions with the terminals on the AGM to ensure no possible short. Unfortuantely due to the size of the AGM this was my only option, the battery will not fit if reversed as the fridge slide is sits very close to the base of the battery. The AGM sits on high density foam and is strapped in tight:

Great work by all. Just wondering if anyone who has made a unit put anything between the carpet and draws for protecting carpet from wear?
If not has it showing any wear ? Was at bunnings today they want $37m for carpet !!
                            Thanks

No I don't think you would need it.... Mine's had engine blocks and the pram gets dragged in and out daily and doesn't show any wear...

If you mount your draw system corretly then there shouldn't be any movement anyway.
