  • Ironman bar shaking alot on 120 series

I recently got a Ironman winch bar fitted to my rig, looks great but geeeess it moves around alot and bangs on bigger bumps and corrigations compared to my ARB bar on my 05 hilux.
the bolts that Ironman fitted were weak as so I put bigger bolts in.
does anyone have or seen a similar problem

Commone problem with the Prado... It's actually the body moving on the body mounts more so than the bar moving. However, if it's banging on larger bumps etc then it may be fitted up a bit to close to some of the panel work...

I test drove a 120 prado with an alloy bar on it, and it also wobbled around "alarmingly"... so along with reports of Ironman Bars moving, it's obviously not just ARB bars that do it!

As Mumsrig says " It's actually the body moving on the body mounts " The bar is bolted direct to the chassis and cant "move" . What you see is you and the body moving on the rubber body mounting blocks . Have a look at the front body mounts they may be loose, or put in a couple of washers to tighten them up a bit. Opps I should have had a look first , not to tight then , forget the washers ok

Thanx guys, I will check front body mounts
The body doesn't appear to be hitting the body
I never noticed any movement with genuine alloy bar compared to Ironman

Be careful about over tightening the body mounts - that's what causes the cracked inner guard problem.

Also, make sure you have 25mm clearance between the fenders and the bar to allow for the movement.

Don't overtighten the body mount bolts too much or you'll start to see cracks in the guards.

I have the Ironman bar on my 120. When fitted there was a knocking sound when I hit harder bumps, eventually found that one of the mounting points had to be ground back to stop hitting the body coz it moves so much independently of the chassis. We tried two different bars and they both did it. Hope this helps...

My guess would be that the Prado may have softer body mounts than the Hilux to provide a softer ride being a passenger vehicle rather than a commercial vehicle such as the Hilux. Just a thought though, I may very well be wrong.

I have an ARB steel bar on my 120 and it shakes quite a lot. like Justin said, its because of the body mounts. You will also find that if you get a front wheel off the ground the bar will flex and probably touch a front quarter panel.. my bar shakes so bad that every now and again it will knock the front panel....
                      Normal apparently
