  • Airtec Snorkel and Rust!!!

    G'Day Crew,

Just noticed that the brace which holds the airtec snorkel to th e inside of the drivers side door frame (A Pillar) has loose screws. Looking between the brace and the door frame I can see rust forming around the screw and the panel itself is bulging!

Not happy Jan, not happy at all. Will be taking it back on Monday to have it looked at and repaired etc. Not been happy with their install/service from the start.

Bloody hell rust! in a new car that is only 4 months old............ I had my doubts installing a snorkel.

Hopefully they can do something about it. Any ideas what they will do to fix it or prevent it spreading?

    Regards,

    DarkHorse

      Gidday Rob,

Look around for a product called Neutra-Rust. It's a white liquid which, when applied to bare or rusted metal chemically treats it and leaves a hard coating. It turns green during the reaction, then eventually translucent black. It can be painted over in the usual manner. It is not your typical treatment containing phosphoric acid, etc.

I used this stuff back in the 80's when I was in the automotive glass industry. It was the only stuff that worked for more than a couple of months without failure.

Not quite sure where you'd get it up there, but there is a company called Bris-Vans, which was associated with a former client of mine in Sydney (Tysons Pty. Ltd.). They have an excellent reputation in van windows (cutting holes in the side of them and installing glass). They used to treat all their vans with this stuff, with excellent results.

      http://www.tysons.com.au/contact.html

They are an ethical company who have been in the business continually since the 70's. Give them a call. If they're not using Neutra-Rust anymore they can point you in the right direction of a suitable replacement.

Not sure if he's still running the show, but ask for Warren Tyson (one of the original partners).

I have no association with Tysons apart from having been a former supplier and more recently a satisfied customer (towbar and 3rd row seat in a previous vehicle).

      Hope this helps.

Sounds like it would be better with a Riv-nut in there instead of a screw into panelwork?

Thats a damn good idea TP.
I think i will find some of those Riv-nuts and re-install the snorkle.

              Thanks Guys for the replies.

Took the car back today. They took it away, removed the screws, cleaned it up, put the anti-rust on it and then used stainless steel screws with locktight to hold them in place. Will see how it goes.

Still I am concerned about the rust, will see what happens and keep a close eye on it.

I also backed it into one of the support posts for the carport! Lucky the posts are timber and just caught the right rear wheel arch flare. Scratched the paint slightly and a small indent into the plastic. Already had a quote on repairing it. $396.00

Can hardly notice it, but will get it fixed sooner rather than later.

              Regards,

              Rob

Hi guys, yes the product that john mentions is good. I also use a product called Fluid Film. it coats metals so that rust is kept at bay.
