Well yes a hydraulic is definately easier to use, but im planning a big trip thru the north of oz and im sure a hydralic jack will cause trouble when your bogged up to the axle in sand or mud... also a high lift will also double up as a crude winch if its needed...

Can a high lift jack be used without buying aftermarket bullbar & rear steps???

Sure - exhaust jacks look cool and would definatley work well but I look at it like this... they get punctures and they take up more room in the back of me vx!!! I dont think this is what im looking for!HERS - KZJ120, BILSTIEN / KINGS, AMTS GEAR, RHINO GEAR, OUTBACK DRAWERS ETC ETC ETC

I dont think that a highlift jack for getting you out of deep bogs is going to be that useful. It might, but in reality if you are bogged in mud then a high lift is going to be a nightmare. If yu are bogged in sand it might help, but a set of maxtax and a good shovel will be far easier, safer and quicker, not to mention lighter than the high lift.
Have you ever tried winching with a high lift? once again it can be done but it is very very slow, bloody hard work and you need to carry more heavy chain to make this work. Highlifts have their uses, however I see them as a last bit of kit to complete your recovery gear rather than a first option, jacking and side ways shunting in deep ruts is probably where they are the most useful, I have only ever done this once and it was the camper trailer we were shunting sideways.
For my money, if you are travelling solo around the North of the country my recovery kit would go like this. In order until you don't want to spend any more, or cant carry any more.
1. good shovel
2. Maxtrax.
3. Snatch strap, shackles, bridle etc.
4. Electric winch, winch extension.
5. Highlift Jack or air bag.
I might even consider the winch to be more important than the snatch strap, especially if you are travelling solo, snatch straps are a lot cheaper though.

Have a read of Len Beadells books, he recovered his old jeeps and Landrover countless times using a hydraulic bottle jack rather than a High Lift, And offroading doesn't get any harder than what Len did in his day.
