    Hi All

I have recently got a compressor for my vehicle, I would like to mount it inside the engine compartment. I have three questions:

    1. do you have any comments? I am thinking it may be very noisy if I dont mount it on rubber?

    2. I will also install air lockers in the future. Does the compressor run the whole time the lockers are engaged?

    3. I am thinking of adding a presure tank as well, would this be useful for air tools, as well as the lockers? I reckon I should be able to fit a 10l tank

    thanks

What compressor did you get? The Arb car mount one comes with rubber feet to insulate the vibration and noise. The car mount one also confess with an air tank sufficient to run lockers.

The compressor will prime for 2-3 seconds to activate the solenoids to lock the diff, after this, although the compressor is on, it will cut out a the desired pressure is already reached.

I just put the ARB high output in...its a little ripper.from 22-38psi in about 1 1/2 mins....i'm happy. You can add a tank. The double chamber ARB can be purchased with a tank but I think you'd struggle to fit that compressor in with a tank unless the tank was mounted remote to the compressor, like in the cab somewhere.

+1 on the ARB underbonnet compressor. It took me about 2-3 hours to fit and wire it neatly, now its just a case of pulling out the orange hose and flicking a switch.

I often hear that people want a tank or a bigger compressor to run air tools, but what air tools are you thinking about? I would be surprised if most people even own air tools. Most air tools take a huge amount of air to run and I doubt a 10lt tank would make much difference unless you had a really high volume air compressor like an endless air, but these are not normally used with lockers.

I previously had an air tank mounted in my first Prado, I found it was a waste of time, in fact it often made pumping up tyres slower rather than quicker.

          Cheers Andrew

Have to agree with Andrew 100%. I had a large tank in the last Prado and an isolation valve between it and the compressor. The compressor could also be switched from the cabin and I had a pressure switch cutout. If I was doing a lot of beach work I would open the isolation valve and run the compressor when I aired down and have the tank full and pressurised. If I forgot then I left the tank isolated because the time it takes to fill the tank was about the same as inflating two tyres.

As for air tools I bought a decent 18V cordless impact gun and it is what I use now, two or three settings and much more user friendly. The only air I use is for filling tyres.

Having said that I will try to work out how to put a decent sized tank on the 120 when I get around to fitting the double headed ARB compressor in the next few weeks (months?) so I can use the 'blow' gun, very handy to get rid of sand and dust.

waste of time and money . your average arb compressor won't even blow dust out of the car ( i tried it on cape york ) 10 litre air tank capacity is barely enough to do anything , you need free air flow capacity . the idea of being able to pump your tyres up really quickly is a bit of a wank . if youv'e ever been 4 wheeling with a group , every one stands around waiting while you air up or down and you are controlled by the slowest member or compressor ,so you get to stand around for longer after winning the pitstop race . massive expense so you can say , look at me . not to mention you have to find a space to put a useless 10 litre tank and its associated plumbing . (this is my opinion only it is not gospel and i fully expect someone with an air tank to say its the best modification on the planet and that im an idiot. they'll probably be driving a GU patrol or something like that .)
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

Hi Guys thought I would show you some pictures of my Tigerz11 air compressor which I mounted in the engine bay of my 2003 Prado. I like the convenience of having the compressor easily accessible and this way it also frees up a bit of space in the back of the car. I folded some alloy up to make a box which I was able to mount using existing holes on the body. The box also helps to protect the compressor from some of the extremes of being in the engine bay. I only had to move the carbon canister and a little silver box widget which was very easy.

I have found the Tigerz11 compressor to be very good value at only $110, we do a bit of sand driving on Stockton beach and normally drop the tire pressures to around 22psi. At the end of the day it only takes 5-10 min to pump the tires back up to 40psi, much better than waiting in line at the servo.

I saw one of the new double ARB compressors in a 100 series Cruiser. Amongst its other purposes was the running of a Mack horn! DAMM LOUD! Nearly as good as the train horn I have my eye on, but need a similar compressor or compressor/tank combo to run.

I plan on putting my double header ARB compressor in the winch space of the bar. Have all the fittings I need to run the inlet up and out of harms way. Just struggling to find the time to commit a whole weekend to the task of making mounts etc.

Spent a few hours on Saturday with the dual head ARB compressor and have worked out the bracket I need. I will get some steel over the next week or two and start fabricating. Not a complicated bracket but the compressor will sit a bit higher than I first planned. Will need to get a right angle fitting to come out of the top of the compressor so I can keep the hose tidy. Extended air filter will sit up next to the OEM battery. This all leaves space for my revised auxiliary wiring and fusebox. (God what a mess that is).

Spent a couple of hours yesterday fabricating the bracket for the ARB CKMTA12 compressor. Son's mate has one of those self contained blaster units so son went off and blasted the bracket and then put 803 wet on wet coats of cold gal on it. Hmmm I reckon it will dry in about 2016! Will have to strip some of the paint off today otherwise it will crater crack. Damn. Test fit with compressor later...

hey ml just a thought, this is my opinion, i know the arb compressors are well sealed from elements but do you think the compressor is going to handle being behind the bar in the winch area, ie its going to cop a crap load of water and mud when you decide to venture into mudholes and water crossings. cheers samo
