  • What size winch for a Prado?

    Hi Guys,
What size electric winch do most people use on the front of the Prado? - what would be the minimum size?
    Thanks for your thoughts.
    Bruce.

I've used a 9000lb Avenger on my vehicle to get me, and my mates, out of some pretty sticky situations and it's never struggled.

You would be kidding yourself to go for anything less than a 9,000lb winch, Tiger make some 11,000lb winches, how these compare to a 9,000lb winch i coudlnt tell you.

General rule of thumb for winches is 1.5 x times the weight of the vehicle. So 9000lb is fine unless you often tow a camper, then look at a 12,000lb. Of course you can always double up and run a snatch block with a smaller winch but that makes things slower.

My winch 9.5 Warne failed me once, but in ll fairness that was one border track with the rig fully laden with my fat arse and gear and a heavy trailer whilst 3/4 of the way up one of the large sand hills. I didn't think i was asking too much, but the more experienced like AJ were not surprised.

Ok so maybe the sand was soft too:

OK so I have a Kimberley Kamper..... maybe a 12000 and a snatch block or is that overkill?
What do you think is the toughest winching condition - uphill, sand or mud?
It appears that the Dyneema cable saves about 15 -20 kg in weight (not a bad thing), any problems with the synthetic? OK through a snatch block?
Do you reckon you need a second battery or is the main battery ok in most cases?
Any point you think is critical in winch design?
I know..... alot of questions, sorry.
                Thanks,
                Bruce.

I have a 12000lb with Dyneema rope, no complaints from me so far, I haven't had the need to run the rope through snatch block, but then again I don't use it that often. Mostly just for winching MLC So no not overkill and rope throught the snatch block shouldn't be an issue.

I only have a relatively cheap winch, TigerZ11 and it seems to perform well. Warn is the premium brand, however I note a recent thread where some Warn winches were not handling water too well, I have had mine through a couple of moderate water crossings, deep enough for the winch to be below the bow wave and so far it still works fine.

                  Cheers Andrew
