  • Air compressor review - 24 models

    Hi Guys,
This is priceless. Found this while trolling around for info. on my next air compressor purchase - maybe it can help you too.

    Cheers, Bruce.
2007 Silver Grande D4D. ARB deluxe bar, 12000 ORU winch, IPF 800xs HID driving lights, Bilstien/Dobinson 2" lift, Pirana diff. breathers, TJM snorkel, BFG All terrain tyres. Tunit power chip pulling a Kimberley Kamper with "the lot".

Indeed - the final tables are very skewed by warranty though. The Tigerz11 compressor came first in it's price category in every single test yet somehow ended up on the bottom of the table.
2009 Prado 150 D4D GXL with 265/70R17 Cooper AT/3 tyres, Max Trax, HR tow bar, Airtec snorkel, UHF and the usual recovery gear. On the list: cargo barrier, Bilstein shocks and King springs, deluxe winch bar, 10000lb winch, Lightforce 240 XGT spotlights, dual spare wheel carrier

Go a belt driven one off the motor if you can. Best thing I have ever fitted.

I wouldn't mind betting that most of those compressors come out of a handful of factories (ie. the Tigerz11, Terrain Tamer 3 & Dr Air) and that if you grabbed a different unit off the shelf for each of those ones, the test results would change quite a bit.

While there will be intra-model variability, same factory does not necessarily mean same spec. All the Cooper and Mickey T's come out the same factory, for instance, but they each have have multiple designs.

Flea bay have 150L compressors for as low as $60.00 delivered. Probably just as good as all the other chinese compressors in this test. My old ARB one continues to pump well now 12 years old fitted to the old D2, it is just not a high flow job. Could not help myself and picked up an Aldi one a couple of years ago. It pumps real well too and I was going to fit it to the Prado but it is just a bit too big. Going for the newer ARB one as it is a lot smaller and will fit nicely into the engine bay of the P. 120. All factors in what compressor to get.

My 15 yr old ARB compressor takes ages to do four tyres and will cut out when doing the first tyre of the camper trailer (tyre 5) so I think I'm in the market for a new one. I like the ARB twin but it is a big unit. My KC compressor, which came with a subscription to 4WD Action mag, continuosly blows fuses so I don't like using it.

                Aldi Air Compressor

last night i did a practical test of the adli compressor ....

                # found the 12v power lead to short...
                # the air coil hose too long
                # the pressure gauge in accurate by 10 psi

I stripped the switch end case off the compressor and found the electrical connections
to be a true reflection of the price... re soildered the poor conections // heat shrink.
replaced the 12v lead will a new one that will get the compressor to each wheel with ease

replaced the air guage with a another one i had in the shed.. more accurate...

shortened the flexible air hose so its only about 1m long..

have a inline fuse on the on the battery clips now... so

generally i have changed the set up so i'm not walking back and forwards around the rig... and the compressor is by my side

                cheers butane

Read that PDF and almost bought a Dr Air but thankfully inherited a BushRanger. Despite my mates concern of its current state (couple of years old!!!), took it out and used on all 4 new BF Goodrich AT from 15 PSI to 40-45 PSI with no issues cept for damn mozzies ..!!! Done in about the time that is stated in the test for the model I had. Can't say for the other models. Like they all say, take it with a grain of salt.

Got the ARB Twin compressor about 10 months ago. Cost a little bit, but bloody hell does it pump up a tyre! Did a bit of a test on a Robe trip a month after I got it. It pumped up 4x Prado tyres and 4x 100 Series tyres before my mate had even done 3x 100 Series tyres with his Bushranger compressor. Not exactly comparing apples with apples, but the ARB Twin blows so to speak!

                    Cheers,
                    AJ

Better to have a shorter 12v cable to keep up the voltage to the compressor and a longer hose, but better quality than the standard. The motor will last longer and pump faster. I use a hose long enough to do all wheels without having to move the compressor.

                      Cheers, Jim

Long cable doesn't lead to a blown fuse. Just check the voltage at the compressor. The higher the better so it isn't struggling with a reduced current, taking ages to inflate. Sure way to shorten its life. Budget items like these are mostly let down by inferior components that can be easily upgraded. I mounted my Maxair next to AGM battery and shortened the cable with no voltage drop at all. I also turfed the rubbish coiled hose and replaced with high pressure hose long enough to reach all corners.

                          Jim.
