  • Basic bog stuff

    Sorry but this has probably been on here before, but I cant find it.

    We are going to Fraser for a week, but we dont use the car as a 4WD much, normally just to and from work - hence we dont want to spend alot of money.

    What will we need in case we get bogged?

    We have looked at those blow up things that you attach to the exhaust pipe and it inflates under the car to get you out. Too expensive for us.

    We have a shovel and compressor - thats about it.

    Any basic stuff we can get that wont cost heaps that we can take just in case we get bogged? Wont be much room in the back with all the kids stuff etc.

    Appreciate it.

    I'd carry a set of Treds/Maxtrax etc and be prepared to drop your tyre pressures way down. Your own snatch strap and a couple of shackles wouldn't hurt either.

      1. tyre pressure gauge
      2. compressor
      3. maxtrax/treds 2 sets
      4. least aggressive tyres are better
      5. tide chart and weather report eg. swell
      6. recovery point, snatch strap and shackles
      7. a brain and you wont need much of 1 to 6 :-)

        Bare minimum:
        Pressure gauge/Deflator
        Long handled shovel
        compressor
        Snatch strap and rated shackles (not to be used if you don't know what you're doing. Dynamic straps are bloody dangerous when used incorrectly. Usually by people who only use their 4WD properly once or twice/year.)

        A set of Maxtraxx will save you a lot of shovel work and snatching. You'll be glad you've got them the first time you get yourself unbogged. Have fun and be safe.

          At under $300 a set of MAXTRAX are about the best insurance policy you can get for sand driving. Steer clear of the snatch strap unless you know what you are doing. Low tyre pressures, a shovel and a set of MAXTRAX will get you out of 99.9% of sand related boggings.

          People have mentioned low tyre pressure, if you are stuck and you are at risk of loosing your vehicle to the incoming tide the super low is always an option, I know of one instance as described above where 4psi saved the day. We regurlarly go to 10psi and lower in some of the super soft sand down here.

          16-18psi will get you through most sand, just keep your speed down at low pressures, speed = 3 x PSI is a good rule of thumb.

          Cheers Andrew

            Also Clown, since your Prado is "bog standard" (No bullbar or the like with decent recovery points) might I recommend that you get yourself a Bridle to accompany the Snatch Strap. (also known as an equaliser strap)
            What is a bridle I hear you ask? Google will give you plenty of info, but essentially it's an equalising strap that has a loop at each end to connect shackles to the your 4wd's two tie down points and is designed to spread the load across the vehicles subframe/chassis. Your snatch strap is then attached to this for a safer recovery, minimizing stress on your vehicle.

            A recovery damper is a must also in case of a failure.

            Enjoy...

              A cheap alternative to using maxtrax product would be to use the base of bakers crate, like a milk crate but longer. Just cut off the sides and cut one crate base in half to make 2. Also totally flat and easy to store .

                Just got back from Fraser on Saturday. Inland tracks are a bit wild at points (partic to Moon Point) and Indian Head bypass road is quite soft and boggy - so be prepared for some snatch action if heading that way.

                Other than that - I took:

                * Tyre deflators
                * Compressor
                * Shovel
                * MaxTrax
                * Recovery Gear (snatch strap / shackles)

                Didn't need any of them for me (just the snatch for some moron who decides it is ok to travel on 4wd tracks WITHOUT recovery gear)

                So with some common sense you should be fine.
