Sorry I have been searching and reading but I am still unsure, hence a new post with a fresh question.
I have a 2004 GXL with no roof rails and 3 rhino-rack aero bars. I use these bars for the following;
A medium rhino basket with a bag / arb side awning / rhino shovel holder and when all of this is not on I have two rhino bike carriers, for mountain bike with front wheels off. ( I.e not a lot of weight ever carried as I also have a camper trailer with a rack)
I have just purchased a second hand 2009 GXL that has roof rails, it is still a 120 series.
A benefit of the 3 bars on the 2004 / no rails / is the 3 bars supports the ARB side awning well and the medium basket (I think the basket is a half one in that it is narrow) spans the 3 bars / just. As I said I never have that much weight up top.
Based on my usage of the racks, should I just remove the roof rails on the 2009 and move across the 3 aero bars from the 2004 and will they definitely be compatible. Also will the rails on the 2009 fit on to the older 2004 model, as this could help the private sale of my 2004 GXL which I will have to put on the market soon.
