Just need to be aware with these mudflap extensions that if you get bogged and try to reverse out; you will drag the mudflap back into the wheel and most likely tear off the entire thing, that happened to me a few times before I ditched the idea.

    Cheers Andrew

Hey AJ120, yeah that was my biggest concern. I see the shorty hiluxes with stupid high 6 inch lifts have a chain fastening the flap to something behind, assuming this is to alleviate this problem.

          2 solutions I guess:

          1. If I get bogged, calmly climb out of the car, into croc infested water/knee deep mud, with my ring spanner and socket set (kept under the seat for this occasion) and remove the flap before reversing.
          2. Don't get bogged.

          Both seem entirely plausible?

(Anyone know how much a couple of rear OEM flaps go for? I have a feeling I might be up for some somewhere around Oz)

Bushbasher, it's been killing me what 'GBL's' meant??

I have a chain on mine so they can't be pulled into the rear wheels..

That said even the standard mudflaps are able to be taken by the tyres.

I think I paid about $120 for the last mudflap I bought.

$120? Ouch! Well, the main purpose is to stop the camper getting hammered and the tailgate getting peppered with ricocheting stones. They are so simple to remove, if we get into some rough stuff (bog worthy stuff) the camper is probably not going to be hitched so I could always whip the extensions off.

Matt how about using a clevis pin and R clip instead of bolts to hold the big fellas on?

Bolts are almost easier. Rattle less too usually.

Make sure with the extensions that they're separate on each side. Having to store a prado width mudflat isn't fun haha. Mine breaks into three pieces now.

Hmmm, hadn't thought of that. Would it be a bit tricky to get a clevis Pin the right length to ensure there is no play, I've been obsessed with trying make sure everything is well fastened because I'm paranoid about anything with even a little movement will turn bad once we hit the plenty highway and the corrogations. The R-clip will certainly make for a quick release when needed.

                          Any recommendations?
                          Hi there,

I recently replaced the mudflaps front and rear on my 120 GXL (50 mm lift and Cooper ATR's) with off the shelf aftermarket ones from Super cheap Auto and a few 100 mm straps from Bunnings. I also added stone protection at the front of the rear Tyre as the Coopers where flicking enough stones to cause a grove on the end of the side step. A little bit of fiddling but a good result and much less stone damage. I have some snaps I can add if anyone is interested.

These are the ones I made when we upgraded to the VX. Now 5 years old and 200000 and still going. Mounted so when reversing don't get caught.

Whack up some pictures, they never go astray and always make it easier for anyone wanting to do similar.
