  • Reversing Camera with Mirror Monitor Good or Bad?

Does anyone here have experience with the reversing cameras which display the image on the rearview mirror when you put the transmission into reverse? I don't know what is a good aftermarket brand and if they work well in this instance?

Most guys on PP seems to be using the multi function screen in the stereo unit. I haven't got a fancy monitor/screen in my stereo system, just the OEM unit (which I'm happy with), so the mirror system would be preferable. There are a gazillion brands on ebay ranging from cheap to expensive. Any advice from those that have installed one of these units and is happy with the outcome would be appreciated.

I just had reverse camera installed with the built in monitor to the rear view mirror.

Can't fault it so far, they came and do the installation as well. I also fitted reverse sensors as well at the same time.

Makes reverse parallel parking my Prado a whole lot easier ! The camera was probably enough as I can see my towbar with it.

Thanks for the feedback. Does the mirror clip over the existing Prado unit or do they install a new arm?

I have one that clips over the existing mirror on the ute. It is almost useless as a mirror and not much better as a reversing camera. No idea what brand but it isn't much use. Having said that a mirror in a ute with a canopy is pretty useless too but compared to the basic little screen in the 150 it is about 20% as useful on a good day, 0.03% at night.

I have the monitor that clips over the mirror in our Tarago. The weight of the screen makes it vibrate a lot while driving. Drove my dad nuts when he first drove our car.

The other problem is that when you put it in reverse, the screen isn't bright enough to counter the glare from the rear window during the day. But it is otherwise fine at night. The system was purchased back in 2007 so technology may have changed since then.

The best screen is still the one that is built into the stereo. http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...er-Toyota-unit

I saw a factory version on eBay the other day, I never knew they made one.

I know FJs have the screen on the factory rear mirror and it is a good screen but it is too small.

Thanks for this. Had no idea Toyota made a kit for the Prado. It looks like the camera is sold separately. Anyone got one of these genuine Toyota units?
The market is flooded with Chinese kits on ebay but it sounds like it's a bit of a mixed bag from the feedback here.

The cameras are OK. It's the screens.

I'm not sure if you bought the Toyota mirror/screen, whether a non-genuine camera can plug into it. It might not be a straightforward plug n play.

the new mirror replaces the OEM mirror. So new arm and mirror

                      This mob!!
http://mongoose.com.au/products/reve...-monitors.html do a good range in reversing mirrors. They are also made for Tojo vehicles so compatibility would not be a problem!

I thought about one a few years ago but for 4wdriving they would just not cut the mustard! Like Amts suggest the screens are not fantastic and subject to a lot of glare so I slapped myself in the head and put it to bed. I've also a Grande with the OEM indash sat nav. I could link up a reverse camera to that but I went a bought a separate reverse cam and indash aftermarket unit and that's the way I'll go. I'd rather go Mongoose though than fleabay!! Hope it helps.

I put a replacement unit in the car with a dedicated camera, got it from here http://www.digoptions.com/

I looked at the clip on units but did think they were a bit of a toy

If you decide to go this way go into it with your eyes wide open:

I researched this topic long and hard but the name Dodgyoptions came up too much and they were not compatible with smart arse 3g i phones (the phone I had). Just seemed too many issues so I put this firmly to bed too! Could be the perfect thing for your requirements though?? I thought the reverse mirrors were a bit of a toy too esp for 4wd's!

I thought the cameras were a bit of a toy also, but have since reversed into two objects that were hidden in the blind spot and were not viewable from mirrors - especially with gear stored up in the back. Gotta watch out for tree stumps which are just high enough to smack the bumper but remain out of view. I reckon they should be mandatory on all cars especially when you hear of kids getting run over in the driveway. The Digioptions looks pretty neat, but seems some people are not happy with them? If I had the money my preference would be a new stereo unit with monitor but they are pretty expensive.

Or you could do what I did and buy the OE camera with an upgraded OE head unit.
