  • GPS/CD player stopped working

I have a 2003 120 series Grande and my GPS/CD player has just suddenly completely stopped working (nothing turns on at all).

My husband thought maybe it was just a fuse but they all seem to be fine.

Would anyone have any ideas on any other issue it could be that would be a fairly simple fix?

If it is dead and I need to buy a new head unit do I need to buy a complete new GPS too? Or is the current one something that can just be connected into a new head unit?

    Appreciate any help!

    Thanks

The satnav on the 2003 Grande has a separate DVD drive under the driver's seat. You can buy the same headunit from that era and plug it in and it would work. No idea why it would stop working all of a sudden apart from a fuse (you need to buzz out the fuses) or someone has done some work around your dash and there is a connector that has worked itself loose. Is there anything else in the centre console that is not working?

no, everything else is working. No one has been doing any work on the car recently. It worked last time I drove it saturday and then when I got in it Sunday it wasn't working.

I do drive a lot of bumpy roads though if that would be enough to cause something to loosen?

Would I be able to plug it into a newer head unit? I wouldn't mind getting a new one to be honest, something with mp3 and bluetooth.

The cables are unlikely to loosen as they are all "clicked" in. But it may be possible that if no one has ever touched the console area that a particular cable may have worked itself loose from not being inserted properly from the outset. Just double check all the fuses again (under the bonnet and in the footwells). Where are you located? Someone nearby might be able to assist.

Ballarat area, vic. Do you know which fuses in particular are for the CD player? Just to make sure we have checked all the right ones?

Yes you can. Should be plug and play. Some of the later units require you to get a separate adaptor cable for the antenna.

Well I pulled it apart, couldn't find anything wrong but when I put it back together it worked. But now I still can't use it because I don't have the damn security code!

The code might be in your owner's manual.

It's not in anything that came with the car

Many owners (like myself) set the code to a fav number

Take it to Toyota and get the code (cost?)

Otherwise try the last 3 numbers of the VIN.

                        Good luck.

Yeah I tried the VIN, didn't work. Toyota are going to charge me 55 bucks to decode it.

I got the name and address of the previous owner but can't find a phone number to contact to see if I can get it

Can anyone recommend another head unit that is compatible with the existing Sat Nav unit? Preferably on the cheaper side, but not cheap and nasty

As you now know how to remove the head unit, I would suggest that you drive it there and get the head unit out yourself. Then all Toyota has to do is get the yellow box out and reset the head unit and clear the security code. However for them to do that, you must try and enter the code yourself for 10 times until you are totally locked out of the unit. By removing the head unit yourself, your dealer should not be charging you that much for a 10sec job. Refer to my post here http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post266975
