  • Dual position Cargo Barrier

    I Hi

I'm hoping someone can help me, I've done a heap of searching and haven't found anything.

I want to put a cargo barrier behind the front seats in my 120 GXL. I want to remove the mid row seats entirely, and make the car a two seater. I dont need the mid row seats and I'd like the extra space for long things. I know I should have bought a Ute, but I like the Prado.

I know Ausguard make a dual position Cargo barrier, does anyone have any pictures of it installed in the font position, or does anyone know whether it fits just behind the front seats, or just behind the mid row seats folded forward? I have a Lifestyle fridge mount where the single mid seat is, and I'd like to keep it there and put the cargo barrier between the fridge and the front seat if possible.

    Cheers for the help

I have the Ausguard, but never have mounted it in the forward position. Mounted in the rear position, it sits just behind the mid row seats.

I also have the same mid row fridge mount. Given that the top forward corner of the fridge rests quite close to the back of the front seat, I don't think the cargo barrier will fit between the fridge and the seat. Might depend on which fridge you have, we have the ARB. If I get a chance, I will measure the base extensions for you, that would give an idea where the bottom rail would sit. I suspect that position would be half way through your fridge though.

Bottom line: I think you would need to modify the mounts to do what you propose. Somewhere on here there is a post by someone who removed the rear and mid seats, and mounted a barrier behind the front seats, for a big trip. I think it was sometime around 2009. The back area was consumed by gear, spares and fuel. Sorry I can't remember who it was, or what the trip was, but it was well done.

I've also got an Ausguard dual position, never fitted in the front position. By co-incidence, I've got to take it out this weekend as I need all 8 seats. I'll mount it forward and take a pic before I remove it if you want?

Pretty sure it sits behind the folded up middle row and not the rear seats.

Yeah, there seems to be lots of pics of the barrier installed, but nothing in the forward position. Maybe I'm the first person who wasn't to turn an 8 seater into a 2 seater permanently!

R4andell, if it's not too much trouble, that would be fantastic!

          Thanks for the help!

Not a problem. 4 bolts and 5 minutes of my time.

You might be able to estimate the final position of the cargo barrier by measuring the length of the arms from the forward position fixing points.

                Found it!

Quicky has a thread "Decked out to tour" showing a forward Milford behind the front seats and an Ausguard in the normal position. He removed the middle row completely.

I checked it out this weekend. I have the 114BM model
With the middle row folded up, the barrier doesn't fit! Pushed as far forward as possible, it sits about 100mm too far back with the attached fixing points. With the rear seats removed it would probably sit right on top of where the seat pistons/hinges are. I am not sure if you can get different length mounting arms?

Barrier as far forward as possible

Thanks heaps for those photos, much appreciated. I emailed Ausgaurd, and they said the barrier is designed to work with the seats in place, but looking at the photos, thats definitely not true.

I havent worked out what I'll do yet. Because if I move the cargo barrier forward, i'll have to move the fridge back, which isnt a huge issue, except that I like the fridge being protected by the cargo barrier. I dive, and I'd hate to think of a couple of tanks colliding with the fridge hunder heavy breaking. Duel cargo barriers could work...

Thanks heaps for your help, now to think this through!

Interesting. I thought it fit too! I have an idea that there was some user error involved.

TBH I was in a rush and by myself so didn't spend too much time on it. I've got to it back in this weeekend so I'll have another go with some help from my bro in law. The top mounting brackets are 'flexible'.

My wife took it to get fitted and lost the instructions. I have an idea I want to try
