  • Best cargo barrier?

    Hi all,
Thinking of fitting a cargo barrier into the prado as i use it for work carting tools etc around. There are a few mobs doing them now just chasing peoples thoughs on pros and cons of each one. Also do they rattle much?, and i wouldn't mind been able to pull it out from time to time not often though just incase i need to fit the 3rd row seats for any reason.
    Cheers.

Should be able to search on this subject... lots of talk on cargo barriers already.
Have a look at CraigM's build up. His Cargo draws and barrier come out without much fuss.

I've got an Autosafe barrier which doesn't require any drilling (which is the reason I bought it).

The bottom attaches to the factory tie down points and the top attaches to where the grab handles are (you remove the grab handles to install the barrier). I wouldn't imagine it taking anymore than 5 - 10mins to remove if need be. And it doesn't move at all.

It does mean the rear seats can't recline very much, but the kids no complain. And I feel a whole lot better knowing whats in the back will stay there. When I'm packing the car, sometimes I use occy straps to hold items against the barrier to stop them moving about.

Sorry, no barrier (as yet) but like others, I will most likely be going for the AutoSafe brand due to it's ease of removal..

Another Autosafe here, easy to install/remove, no rattles and airbag compliant without the stupid cut-outs like the Milford.

Thanks guys, sounds like the autosafe's the go. Local ARB bloke tried to talk me out of fitting one, said they all rattle like buggery!.

I wouldn't say it's the best one as I haven't looked at the others to compare it to but we have the genuine/Milford barrier in ours. There had been one installed in the prado previously so the mounts were already in place. I take it out to use the back seats quite regularly and it only takes 3 mins tops to do. And no rattles with it either.

Probably because they don't sell them. I purchased my barrier through Jaram. They are the (or at least one of them) dealer of Autosafe in Perth. Jaram did have a few issues sourcing the right one (tried to give me a Milford which they had in stock when I specifically wanted Autosafe) but it was resolved eventually.

My Autosafe doesn't rattle at all. I do have a fire extinguisher mounted to it and the pin in the extinguisher rattled, until I loosely put an elastic band around it to stop it rattling and it doesn't effect it operation.

Hi Craig, are your drawers removeable? if so could you provide more details?

                      milford mxv

I'm also looking at cargo barriers. I was thinking the Milford mxv-70 which looks a bit different in that its made out of a single sheet of 3mm steel plate with the holes punched. I figured this would be better for stopping rattles and has good strength. It also looks like it mounts via the top roof handles and some mount points at the far rear of the back. All up it looks pretty easy to remove which is a must for me.

I know you can get them for the 150... not sure about the 120.

Yes the drawers are easily removable. Have a look at the Drifta video here http://www.drifta.com.au/YT4W03.htm on the Prado 150 drawer system. At around the 3:10 mark Beechy demonstrates how the drawers are pulled out. From there (with the 120 Prado anyway), it's just a matter of undoing a turnbuckle on each side and removing 2 countersunk screws deep inside in the back of the draws which are a bit of a reach but OK. I swapped out the supplied phillips head screws for countersunk Hex head screws for ease of removal. These utilize the existing tie down fixings in the floor. The complete Drawer system is pulled out in less than 10 minutes and can be done on your own but easier with 2 people to lift the carcass in/out.

I ended up getting the autosafe, fitted it today. I went to the local 4wd place to enquire about them and they had one in stock for the 120 someone had ordered it but cancelled so i got it for $390. Not too bad i thought.

Hi there azzss, I just sold my genuine Toyota barrier (made by Milford) yesterday and bought an autosafe one as I don't have to drill any holes in the car like I would have had to with the genuine one. I bought the autsafe second hand although it will require me to make up some bits to bolt the bottom in, the top did come with the brackets and bolts to secure to the rear grab handles, that was the main thing. I bought and sold for $250 each so it cost me nothing except some fuel to go and pick the other one up.....Any chance you could post a picture of the bottom and the way it secures just to give ma an idea what to get the guys at work make up. this is what I just sold [IMG][/IMG] this is what I just got, this is the top bracket that goes upto the grab handles (it has a bit of black tape over one of the holes [IMG][/IMG] this is the bottom part but Im sure there should be another bit that goes to the tie down points but havnt seen a picture so I can get an idea. Not a real problem if you cant I imagine it would just be a bit of straight thin metal more or less to extend it across to tie down point ??? Cheers Steve [IMG][/IMG] Again just a bit of black tape holding the bolt so it doesn't get lost.......

Steve, that piece is actually 2 pieces, there is a flat bar and a U shaped piece that clamps to the front tie down point.
