  • K&N filter?

    Hi Guys,

Kinda new here but that's besides the point!

I was trying to get the information off the net but it seems to be pretty darn hard to find or maybe I wasn't looking in the right places so I figured

with all the Prado Gurus here I might as well try my luck here.

I'm looking for a K&N filter to fit the Prado 120 that I own, the only problem is I'm running the 2tr-Fe engine and I don't know if the Filter with the

model number 33-2144 would fit. Anyone able to help??

I was considering doing the same thing a couple of years ago and ended up deciding not to go with K&N or any other reusable filter.

I can't point you anymore to the exact threads I was looking at, but the reason I decided to stick with the paper filters was because the oil in the reusable filters can end up killing the MAF sensor - which (at least on my 1KD-FTV) is located on the airbox, right next to the filter. If you come anywhere close to over-oiling the K&N, that oil will splatter all over the MAF, making it useless and causing all kinds of problems.

I think the general consensus is stick with quality paper filters.

A bit simplistic IMO. It's a five minute job to clean the MAF I do mine every 5-10,000 km. it's two screws and a spray of sensor cleaner. Good practice irrespective of filter use.
One of the criticisms of the K&N is that they may not stop dust to the same standard as the OEM filter.

Personally I use the K&N day to day around town and swap to the paper filter for off road work, where dust is an issue. But there is a school of though that suggests an extra spray of oil in the K&N will make it equally effective off road.

Ditto on the cleaning the MAF sensor every 10k. I replace the paper filter about every 10k, and clean the MAF sensor at the same time. The car was having all kinds of troubles when I bought it (check out my first posts here on Pradopoint) - bought it knowing the problems and knowing the former owners had spent a lot trying to fix it - and finally tracked it down to the MAF (50 euro on ebay and (as you said) two screws).

I've had mine for 18mths and 30,000k's, no issues. Just clean the MAF every oil change (10,000k).
Use the K & N around town & blacktop, and have the standard filter for my off road trips.
I bought 2, so have a spare K&N for sale, for the V6 $85 if anybody wants it.
