    Re: Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

Clifton said: it was great when it was going but now have two failed sensors no amount of battery changes seem to revive the sensors into showing the correct pressures and temperatures
Yep - I have a Tyre Dog (6 sensors) and two of my sensors have suffered the same fate which I am disappointed about. As with Clifton's units, they no longer register on the main unit. I notice one of mine occassionally springs into life but its never for too long. New batteries don't seem to help. I'm about to pull the sensors apart and give them a good clean with some isopropyl alcohol or similar just in case they have had some dirt get into the mechanism. I'm not hopeful though. I'll give the importers a call first though just to see what they say. I reckon my units are probably no more than 15 months old - not really good enough on a product that cost $599.

      Re: Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

I have the 6 sensor Tyredog unit too, well out of warranty. They worked well for sometime, but now just don't register all the time. Even when they do register, the pressure and temp often doesn't update for a long time ... specially on the trailer, but on the car too. I've put new batteries in, but it made no difference. It seems they have a very limited lifespan.

        Re: Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

One of our original Toyota TPMS sensors started going off (alarm sounding) each morning when we drove the car soon after arriving in Canberra. At first, we thought it might've had something to do with the (much) cooler weather here in Canberra.

After a couple of trips to Mr Toyota Service for a check of the TPMS, they finally acknowledged that we had a faulty sensor. The first two trips involved being told - unable to fault and sensor being adjusted - no problem. Interestingly, one of the other tyres also kept showing a (very slow but noticeable) loss of pressure. We asked them to check this too and (apparently) the sensor valve hadn't been fitted quite correctly and was leaking slowly!

Anyway - back to the story. Today was our fourth (4th) trip to Toyota to get the faulty TPMS sensor replaced after waiting four weeks for the replacement sensor to be sourced. Well, after couple of hours with our Prado, Mr Toyota emerges to tells us that they accidentally BROKE the sensor during fitting!!!

So now we have to schedule ANOTHER trip to Toyota when then finally source ANOTHER sensor that hopefully might now work.

We are getting over this problem and the failings of TOYOTA to fix the problem the first time around. So far, I reckon we've wasted about 8 hours of our vehicle being parked in the Toyota Service bay and we're presently no better off. Am waiting with interest to hear from Mr Toyota about their plans to fix the fault when they call tomorrow.

Not Happy... not happy at all.

Is anyone using a 6 sensor Tyredog without the intermediate relay. The Tyredog web site only seems to show it with the relay while there are several on Ebay without the relay. Just wondering if the relay is really necessary for a camper trailer and whether Tyredog actually sell them without the relay or are the Ebay ones just fakes.

We have the 8 sensor unit (bought off ebay) and it feeds all the sensors through the relay, tried using just hte monitor and car sensors without fitting relay and soon as out of range no working anymore. I know this does not really answer your question but I would not see why the 8 would be much different to the 6 sensor unit. What does Tyredogs website say?

As per my opinion Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems when kick in, given the wide variance of alarmism the alerts come with and the range of information available to drivers.I am fully supporting to accurate TPMS, It is an important safety factor, reducing the numbers of failures due to running at low pressure.

TPMS helps car driver to maintain vehicle tires, improves vehicle safety and fuel efficiency. TPMS will reduce the number of annual motor vehicle crash fatalities. Tyre pressure is so detrimental to safety and CO2 emission that the US congress has passed legislation that mandates that all cars.

Guys that have a tpms, I'm curious about the sensors on the valve stems. I take it you need to remove the sensors to deflate your tyres?
Does it take long to remove and refit the sensors? I'm thinking that whilst you have the pressure down for some off road work, it is an ideal time to have the sensors working.

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

There's a number of the types around where the sensor is inside the rim as part of the valve stem itself, so there's no issue with airing down using the method of removing the valve insert. This method ensures they don't get wiped off on the tracks or nicked, just have to make sure if changing a tyre that the fitter is aware they are there.

FWIW when in the US recently I hired a Nissan Pathfinder and as stated, all new US vehicles are fitted with a TPMS. It was handy to be able to monitor the tyre pressures on the run.

                        Cheers,

                        Dave

I have the external type on the 120 and internal on my car. While the external can be vulnerable off roading in my view they have some advantages. Easy to change the battery when it runs down, don't need to strip the tyre and it is easy to make sure they are on the correct wheels. I had an issue about 2 weeks ago where I jumped in the car and the TPMS told me the RR was low. Jumped out and looked and it seemed ok though with 30 profile tyres that isn't always obvious. Out with the gauge and ok. The TPMS system is prone to fault occasionally so I thought nothing more of it. Drove down my driveway (250m gravel) and once I hit the road knew there was an issue. On the LEFT side. Sure enough the tyre was down. Now yes I should have checked all four (though front and rear are different rim/tyre sizes). I changed the tyre and luckily no damage and all good. When I had the tyres replaced a month or so before the installers swapped the rims side for side. Again not something I considered. The learning process for these sensors is set the system in learning mode. Air down. Hold. Air back up. For each and every sensor. The external sensors are matched for position so it is simply a case of check the engraving on the sensor with position. As for airing down the external sensors just remove the cap/sensor and go for it. I tend to leave them off if I go below 18psi otherwise the monitor needs resetting.

Regardless of which type I reckon TPMS is very valuable. Especially with silly low profiles like 30 where the sidewall are generally so stiff that a flat tyre still looks ok.

The Toyota TPMS sensors are located inside the tyre itself. The valve is normal - no issues when inflating or deflating tyres.

Yes, besides a low pressure alarm they have a temp alarm as well as a low battery alarm.
