Has anyone considered fitting the compressor (ARB or other electric compressor) behind the bullbar in the space nominally occupied by the winch? Suitably shielded of course...

Other than hindering a possible future winch fitment - i would suspect that the increased chance of water damage to the hose connector n the compressor may cause issues? I know that the standard air intake piece can be removes and an extended hose arrangement used instead - so that would remove the possibility of water being sucked into the compressor...

ARB says that the compressor unit is water tight at all other points...

So, I don't see why this install location would be too much of an issue? Just not seen (or heard of it) being done!

Others have wired it to the illumination wires from the cigarette lighter.

            Question for you LFaR...
The backing plate, it goes under the guard, correct?
I started my install yesterday, and got a little stuck as the bolts did not seem long enough, due to the curvature of the guard itself, especially if the backing plate goes underneath....

I fixed the backing plate to the underside of the wheel arch as I thought this is what the instructions were describing. The plate comes in a sort of polished bronze finish and thought this would look out of place on the underside of the arch so I sanded it to make a good key, primied it with a hammerite primer then sprayed it with hammerite black. Looks much better and blends into the black wheel arch. Then sprayed the protruding bolts and locking nuts with waxoyl.

I also placed some black rubber washers under the feet of the compressor then bolted it down - all good.

Dosn't really mater what the backing plate looks like when you are crusing around and when it is splashed with a layer of mud you don't even know it is there.

I know of a few people who have located the rubber feet to help prevent vibrations. I didn't and it's not too bad when running but would be interesting to hear some feedback on what the sound is like with motor and compressor running when inside with the doors closed. Mine is quite audible but then it reminds me that I might have accidently flicked the switch. Are you planning on runng lockers?

Sounds like you have gone to a fair bit of effort to fit it so it should work out well for you.

The bonus for me was that you showed me where to take off the "Ignition 12v" at the blue/yellow which I needed for a relay for my caravan.
However note that the RED wire next to the blue/yellow at the drivers position fusebox is not Aux/accessories as I found when I used it to wire in my CB. The red is 12v Always (even when ignition/aux switch is OFF).
If you need a 12v Aux feed at not a huge current you can take off from one of the cig lighter points as I did eventually.
                      Thanks Again.
Thank you LFaR (and others), another PP'er that used your bible to get the job done!

What a joy to install, with a quality loom and ARB's instructions, plus the huge amount of detail on this topic I hardly swore at all (not like me...)

My only issue now it that I missed this comment that confirms that on the D4D the Red wire I tapped is not Accessories it is always on, take it the Blue-Yellow is Ignition though.

I think I will re-tap into the blue-yellow and drop my fuse down to 5A from the 10A I have in there at the moment.

Thanks again all for your valuable info.

                      • G'day Michael and all.

It's certainly nice to know others have benefited from this thread. Before I started the initial post, I had already learned so much from others on all sorts of topics that I felt it was time to put back as best I can. Ultimately, that's the best way to repay the efforts of others... paying it forward .

I notice I've had mine installed for just over two years now, and it's been trouble free.

It looks like I need to convert the base-note over to this new forum too.

                        Cheers,
                        LFaR.

                        • Looks like the CKMA12 has got some competition. ARB has just released a new twin motor air compressor (CKMTA12 and CKMTA24) pumping out twice the amount of air as the old CKMA12. Don't know how much they cost but I saw sometrhing over on a Patrol forum quoting $525.

                          • Thanks Mate, i fitted myn with ease after looking at this
It is the first mod for the car and i am really proud of the job
tip for v6 people the carbon canister needs to be moved (well i did) i moved it closer to the fuse box (unbolted the bracket flattened out the locating tab and drilled a hole near the locating tab, made an extension for the bottom mount to use the old hole.

also had to move the ceramic thing with the heat-sink on it (dont know what its called) just put it up on the firewall with one of the bolts that are part of the body.

                            thanks mate

I think I jinxed myself since my last post. On my last inflation, I blew a hole in my air-hose. Upon closer inspection I see the hose is perishing in several places. A little disappointing. Now, I'm thinking about alternatives to ARB's hose. Suggestions, anyone?
