  • Steel roof rack cage

    hey Fellas,

Anyone have a Steel roof rack cage mounted on top of there roof rack bars ? aero bars in particular.

I currently have a thule pod and side awning sitting up top but have to opportunity to acquire a full roof rack cage for free while i'm up here in Darwin,

The pods a loaner from mate back home and with our oz adventure coming to an end in the next few months i thought it might be possible to mount the cage on top of the aero bars and then bang the pod in the roof cage just until we get home?

    cheers in advance

I have the rhino sports bars and have put a steel cage on top of that. I have a oztrail awning and I still have enough for the maxtrax brackets being sold on here. I haven't fully loaded it up. But I had a pod previously and had that loaded up to the max with tent and gear and was no problem.

You can get it from any rhino rack dealer. Or you can order them on line for about the same.

Yep - I have 4 bars on my rails and put a steel basket on them for trips. It has done CSR, Simpson and heaps of the inland roads like this with no problems. BUT with a spare wheel up there it adds about 2+ l/100 to fuel consumption at 100-110 kph.

yeah thought the consumption might change with the steel bar and goodies up there, pod doesn't really effect it i guess due to the aero design. cheers for the feedback guys

Have you got cross bars mounted to the roof rails? How heavy is the new rack? Make sure that you won't exceed the weight limit of the roof.

What is the construction of the new rack? Does it have cross bars, fully mesh or a combination of the 2?

The only steel rack I have had anything to do with was seriously heavy. The 120 roof rails are good for 75kg (I think) so by the time you add 5kg or so for the fitting brackets and the 40+kg for the rack you should be able to hold a couple of toothbrushes up on the roof.

I have the toyota aero bars. [ATTACH=CONFIG]17103

3 bars is 100KG load limit.

Not sure on the weight of rack, i have a few different designs to go through. had a quick look the other day at work and there is about 20 or so some with there own mounts and some without . hoping one without its own mounts will fit and i can buy something to fix it to the aero bars.

Like i said the pod will have to sit in it roof cage till we get home. i can lift the pod off by myself atm so is only around 30kg plus the roof cage 40-50kg? still be well under the load limit.

Seems to good of a opportunity to source one free to pass up

I would opt for alloy in the first instance.

Sorry, thought you were talking about the factory NS bars. I know free is a good price but try and get a weight for the steel rack. I was amazed at how heavy some of the alloy trays are let alone steel racks.

I've been thinking about cutting the rails off my pioneer tray to turn it into a platform to save some weight. Then I can mount the lightbar and work lights to the tray without brackets. Will save about 15kg I reckon

Having now seen the photo of your Sportz bars, I think that it won't be easy to transport a full size steel rack on them. Usually, the full size racks overhangs the mounting feet on the roof. And if the cross bars on the steel rack do not coincide with your Sportz bars, then it can't be "u-bolted" on properly. If that can be done, then you will need to work out how to bolt on the roof pod onto the steel rack. This is because roof pods normally have recesses where the cross bars are meant to go. It is likely that the roof pod won't be able to sit flat on the steel rack. You would need to space it out accordingly in order to bolt down the roof pod safely.
