  • GXL Headunit Upgrade

Picking up an '05 GXL tomorrow and I want to upgrade the factory headunit. Ideally I'd like one with built in Sat Nav, USB slot & Bluetooth hands free phone capability without spending too much coin. I have had a bit of a look around on here but haven't really found any answers.

Is something like this any good? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/D5170A-2-...item541078d81f
Not expecting too much given the price.

Would I be better off using a stand alone GPS & a later model headunit with USB & hands free? Trying to keep the dash neat & not real keen to have gadgets scattered all over the place.

Not long after getting our 2004 Grande a couple of months ago, I installed an eBay head unit (around $600) but there were a lot of little things that annoyed me (one of which being the bluetooth mic level being unusably low). I think quite a few people on here had similar experiences with the cheap eBay options.
So I've just replaced that with a Kenwood unit that does all of the things you mentioned (only one things is that the USB socket is on the front of the unit rather than behind so it could be hidden in the glove box). The satnav is Garmin so it works a treat.
I got a refurbished one from http://shop.jvckenwood.com.au/dnx5310bt.html for $670 delivered. I had to solder up the wiring that came with it to a loom from Repco but that didn't take long. I'm really happy with everything the unit does.

Cheers for the reply. I guess the cheap units aren't so cheap if they end up in the bin! I like the look of the Kenwood, any dramas with refurbished units?

What's the quality like of the hands free on later genuine Toyota units? Tempted to go that way.

Not sure about the later Toyota units myself. The refurbished units come with a 3 month warranty but it means somebody else tested it and it should have been tested by the factory individually. I figured for the price, seemed worth a go to me.

If you are an iPhone person it might be worth waiting to see what Carplay units come out.
I think Alpine was doing one.

I just bought a 2004 diesel and wanted to upgrade the cd player. Found a brand new in the box toyota head unit from a wrecker in Melton for $150 on gumtree. Just had it fitted and it works a treat. No sat nav, just the bluetooth and aux inputs incl. usb. Its basic, but like most toyota stuff, practical and more than capable. And it fits perfectly into the dash. Pairs up fantastically with my phone and plays music via the bluetooth. Very happy with it.

For what its worth... Philips are doing a double din with nav that canbe purchased on fleabag for about $390. Whack a pair of Toyota ears on it so it fits perfectly and it goes great! Its even capable of learning your steering wheel controls without extra adaptors.

how are you finding this unit?
                        what are the maps like?
what camera did you use on it?
did you need to buy a loom to plug it in to the prado?
                        thanks James
