i have been having the same thought's
to the point i have been looking at what i can make to fit under the hitch of the camper to use as a slide
then i would disconnect the camper get the prado free, then snatch, drag or winch the camper pulling it over on the slide
something to think about

Why do people say that a winch is a last resort ? to me, it is a no brainer, if you have a winch, use it prior to snatch strap or anything else, as it is low energy impact, you anchor to something (tree or other vehicle), or if you are pulling some one else out, you are the anchor, and you pull slowly, you have the option of using a double or triple pull using a snatch block.
Much safer than using a snatch strap and lots of kinetic energy.

I don't think your missing anything, I would generally say a snatch strap is the recovery method of last resort, unless its a very easy recovery involving more of a tow than a snatch. Maxtrax are a good safe option in some situations, most notably in sand, but there are times when a winch can be safer and easier and quicker than Maxtrax in sand.
A good case in point would be the time I Lent MLC my 4 Maxtrax to go with his 2 Maxtrax and he was still unable to extract himself, so I winched him out! which he seems to have conveniently forgotten about

Your are not missing anything. Your exactly right.
Every recovery has to be judged on the situation, surroundings etc but i agree with you 100%

I've heard the Runva and Premier winches will pull up to and over their rated loading. Something other winches fail to live up to. Another consideration is that even if it will fit between the chassis rails, I haven't measure it, you won't be able to fit a 10K+ winch without taking the bar off, that refers to a 'proper' 10K winch, Warn etc. Personally I'd be looking at something around 9500 and then take it to a winch specialist to 'strip it and make it over'. Mal Leslie is the man in MEL I'd recommend.
I've got the Domin8R 12,000 lb from Tigerz. I've used it three times now. Each time it was to remove trees from the track. Its been dunked many times and still going well. The Aldi one let me down on the first attempt after water.

Some trips done - Cape York, Fraser Island, Simpson Desert / Central Aust, Vic High Country.
I'm guessing he wants a better winch so he doesn't have to take AJ away on holidays with him all the time.
Does the bigger Runva fit inside an ARB bar?
Might be worth a looksy

with ARB Catalog, with TJM add ons!
For what it's worth early last year we had a trayback cruiser with just over a ton of boat in tow bogged to the axle's in mangrove mud........it had a Premier winch which was new never used and recently fitted 9500lb? from memory stall out after the wheels had been dug clear.......we had to put it into 3 fall's to drag it's sorry ass out.......It was also on good 15deg incline ie; a riverbank.........it did a good job I thought for a small winch.I've also heard good things about the VRS winches getting a flogging and keep ticking on.......Whatever make/brand I think it is important to pull them apart from new and make sure they have been greased/sealed properly from the factory.

Can I still play now I have a 200 series?........Had a 2008 120 Series D4D Manual 6 Speed...STANDARD White, Soverign Bar..........Rear Cage........Dashmat.......GX Wheels with Good Year Dura Tracs........Bilstein/Dobbo 2'' lift.....Safari Snorkel....Canvas Seat Covers.....20%tint..........55W HID Headlights.....Mudmats front and rear.....
22'' Lightbar......
FYI - ARB won't warrant any issues relating to fitting an 'oversize' winch to an ARB bar. When i purchased my new bar they would not fit my Runva 11XP stating it would void my warranty as the bar is only rated to 9500lb.
