    Re: Aldi winch experiment

i know its not an aldi winch but i bought an ironman 9500lb winch last year, and ive had it for about 12months now and it hasnt let me down, on our watagans trip i used it at least 6 times and 4 of those were back to back pulling 4 vehicles up steep clay slopes, its been 4 a swim a few times, i used it again for the first time in 6 months and it went as good as the day i got it. so only time will tell if i should have spent some more coin on a brandname winch but its go me and others out of the shit a few times. cheers samo

      Re: Aldi winch experiment

FYI Aldi will have the winch back in their stores on thursday May 21 for $499 again. I have had mine mounted in the Sovereign bar for a year now. Apart from the solenoid box being ruined by immersion on its first water crossing (replaced under warranty) it works well. I mounted the solenoid box higher up and sealed up the lid with silicone.

If you have had it installed for 12 months can you elaborate on how many times it has been used, types of circumstances etc as it may give a better picture to its reliability and performance?

Its been worked a couple of times just winding the wire back under tension. And a good hour of real work winching our trailer out of deep muddy ruts on a track in tassie. Didnt stall or overheat. Did the job when needed.

            Re: Aldi winch experiment

The Aldi ad says the winch is Tested to AS1418.2 . Does anyone know what standard this is.

              Re: Aldi winch experiment

AS1418 covers all lifting, rigging materials handling equipment.

AS1418.2 is a sub section, this is the Australian Standard for Serial hoists and winches. It sets out design, manufacturing, testing and rating requirements.

All equipment sold in Australia must meet this standard.

It in no way implies any sort of build quality for the equipment, only a minimum standard for testing(if required), Rating, safety etc.

                    Re: Aldi winch experiment

We have operated ours several times and used ours once in a serious recovery. Worked as it should, got us out of a tricky bit with our camper trailer. After once dousing it in a water crossing and have the solenoids fail, the control box was replaced under warranty. I then mounted the box higher up and also ran sealant all around the openings. No trouble since then. Maybe it wont last as long as a Warn, but you can buy 3 or 4 Aldi winches for the price of a Warn.

i have a mate with a lexus 470 with the aldi winch , reckons it was $ 399 well spent . had it 18 months came with a remote , hasn't failed yet including being under water for half an hour .he is a mechanic and is pedantic so he probably paid abit of attention to it during installation. the interesting fact is that on two separate occasions he has used it to recover vehicles fitted with warns that have failed .
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

                        Re: Aldi winch experiment

Oh Dear, It has happened. Our Aldi winch has siezed up and I have given up on it as its the second problem I have had with it. Most likely the damage was done crossing Cockatoo Creek in August and not running the winch right afterwards. But at least it saved us on one occasion so some value for money. After reading the winch comparison in the latest 4WD Action I have chosen as a replacement an Avenger Mako TDS 9.5 which the testing showed kept water out pretty well and hauled its loads just as well as the equivalent Warn. Lets hope it lasts.
