  • Extending power cable to UHF

    Hey guys,

I have recently installed my GME TX3540s into my car and have now decided that I would like to position the unit in a different position. Problem is that the power cable is not long enough! I currently have it hooked directly to the battery and am wondering if I can just simply solder some figure 8 wire that I have in the garage (1.5mm) to the existing wire and extend it further.

As you can probably tell I have no idea about electricals. I know an option is to run the power from the cigerette lighter, etc but I have no idea how to do that (anyone have pictures or a diagram) and I like the option of keeping the UHF running whilst the car is turned off.

    Cheers

So the short answer is yes, no problems just extending the wires.

I am not sure what figure 8 wire is, so cant help you on that. Also 1.5mm, there are different ways to measure wire and 1.5mm may be a bit on the light side for a UHF, you need to look at the amp rating, and from memory you would be looking at 10 amp cable for a UHF.

Also make sure your wire from the battery is suitably fused as close as possible to the battery.

    Cheers Andrew

Figure 8 is just twin core. As AJ said make sure the cable is hapeavy enough gauge. If you aren't sure look at the rating of the UHF and then go to the Redarc site where there is a cable size calculator for cable size in mm2. Go a bit bigger to be sure to be sure.
