  • Has anyone installed an air compressor in the rear hide-y-hole?

I'm planning on installing an on board air compressor and looking at all options.

I cannot afford an endless air arrangement so lets not get into that discussion.

I am probably looking at the ARB single cylinder one.

So with that aside, ideally I would like to install the compressor in the rear of the vehicle so it is then at a middle point between the from of the car and the back of the camper trailer. I do not have drawers (anymore...sob...sob) but I noticed the little LHS hide-y-hole and thought this would be perfect.

    So, has anyone done it?

    The considerations I see are:

    - Heat (surrounded by plastic)
    - Mounting (not sure what metal is behind there)
    - Power (Although there is a 12V socket there, I would have to upgrade the wiring I think)
    - Future install of Air Lockers (not a real problem because to be honest, if I get lockers, they wont be Air)

    Anyone else have any ideas?

Behind the second row seats is an option:

I'm pretty sure I've seen someone on here put one in the rear quarter panel. I did a quick search but couldn't find it. From memory they ran uprated power cable and had to makeup a metal bracket to support the compressor. Seems like a good idea to me, rather than under the bonnet.

Here, I found it. A Prado 150, but the location and concept is the same, rear quarter panel, ARB twin compressor.
About half way down page 6 of the build:

@fatboydave, yeah, that's basically the idea, I'll have a closer look at that thread, thank you.

@muzza72 Ahhhh.... Yeah.... That's the ultimate goal..... I'll see how I go! (What a cool idea!)

Don't forget the noise from the compressor and having to have your door open when airing up. Plus you are talking about mounting it onto the plastic trim? My ARB compressor is mounted under the wing of the bullbar which is a brilliant location.

And where does the jack go in the 120 if you use that space as displayed in the Arab promo?

Hey Bushbasher. Yeah I don't mind needing the door open, my guess is the kids will be out and about while I air up anyway, also not a problem with the noise

I was thinking of making up a bracket that would sit under the plastic but be booted into steel that way it wouldn't be supported by only the plastic trim

I think I saw the Jack was still in the Jack hole in the Arab video? I'll have to have another look

I do like the ire of Isidro the bull bar but as stated earlier, my primary goal is to be central to the front Tyres and the camper Tyres ideally. I actually really like the idea of up under the rear bumper but is pretty harsh back there. I originally found a spot under the rear bumper and though I could put a nitto quick connect fitting in the bumper along with a switch.

I discovered I didn't have enough hose (!) when airing up after the beach run with the Tvan. Luckily the C ute was there so we parked back to front and I did the trailer and Prado and #2 did C ute and Tvan. My compressor is mounted under the bonnet where aux batteries typically live. So my plan is to run a hose to the rear and mount a quick release fitting there on the towbar. Easier that what you will need to do.

I've been carrying an ARB pump in gray case complete with 2 air line hoses, hand guage inflater quick deflater, Staun deflaters, pressure guage, etc for years. Now I can do away with the box with the compressor under the bar. The rest of the stuff packs away nicely in the drawers alongside the recovery gear.

mjrandom, have you looked into an ARB 6m extension hose kit, should get you back to the tyres on the Tvan

                      http://shop.snakeracing.com.au/arb-a...sion-hose-kit/

I got similar 7.5m extension for my bushranger compressor to reach my camper trailer

                      http://www.bushranger.com.au/compres...p#.VssKGNTEmrV

I try to apply the KISS principal for me, looked into option of onboard compressor but all I require

                      Cheers kim

Kim, rear locker is going in so I was planning to run the hose back anyway. Extensions are the cheapest option. I am also going to a Nitto fitting and larger diameter hose as well.

Matt is the rear fitting because you don't have space anywhere else?

@bushbasher. While I agree with you that the web portable in the box is also a great place to keep all air related tools, I'm trying to avoid having 1 more thing to have to pack. We have 4 kids so only have half the room in the back, and trust me, with 4 kids, we literally take the kitchen sink everywhere we go!

@mjrandom. Hey Michael, been a long time! It only about this time of the year I get time to work on the Prado and camper. Just finished mango season and about to begin avos. Hey I love your idea of still mounting under the bonnet (I'll use amts bracket so I can mount it with my racor filter) and just run hose to the back. I guess having a switch down the back wouldn't be hard either being it is only a switch, it wouldn't need to be heavy gauge cable. Could possibly run a bit of light wire down the back with the hose at the same time. I like it!

Matt, I have the switch under the bonnet at the moment but bought another harness (I edited the original...) and will run that to the cab beside the locker switch.

That reminds me, it's been what 3 years now since I intended on getting that 6m ARB extension for the just in case moment I may need it to pump up the trailer. The switch for the compressor would still be in the engine bay as I prefer to have the bonnet up when the compressor is running. And if I place the extension at say the rear bumper, I won't have that issue with disconnecting the hose from a hot air outlet on the compressor.
