WINCH QUESTION

Ok just a quick question from all you experts out there....

A mate of mine has a new 12000lb winch... is it compatible to my rig with a soveriegn bar???

p.s...it has got the box waterproof and fitted for $500....

afaik joey winches are high mount or low mount.

you would need a low mount i would say.

A high mount winch will not fit into a soveriegn bar (not without significant modifications to the bar). You need a low mount
I have not heard of anyone fitting a 12000lb winch to a soveriegn bar. Most people seen to have 9000 - 10000lb winches fitted. My initial thoughts are that it would be too large for the space in the soveriegn bar. The best way to check would be to measure it up and compare the dimensions to those of a winch that is known to fit eg Warn XD9000.
I have a dimensional drawing of the Warn XD9000 but can't post the pic as I'm at work and the IT Nazi has photobucket blocked. I can post it when I'm home if you want.

Note that you will need to add a winch cadle to the soveriegn bar and that this bar is designed to have the cable spool off the top of the winch, where as most winches are installed with the cable spooling off the bottom. This means most winches will need to be installed "backwards". (unless you use a Toyota Super X9 winch which is designed to spool off the top).
Fitting non Toyota winches usually means the fairlead needs to be modified to fit (a bit of work with the grinder). If you plan to use synthetic rope and a hause, you will need to drill and tap extra holes in the cradle, or get a custom hause. Non of these things are major and a lot of people have managed to install non Toyota winches in soveriegn bars.
