  • roofracks?

    Gday Guys

Maybe i didnt look in the right spot but i am trying to find some info on roof racks. Forgive me if i missed it in the search.

I have a 2007 prado and am looking at fitting a roof rack to carry an extra spare and possibly a small tinny. I have heard the tracklander is a winner but i was quoted 1750 without fitting for the basic model aka without extra attachments which seems like a lot of money.

I know ARB do one but is it as aerodynamic / as good as the tracklander?

If i wasnt going to buy a tinny can anyone recommend a good one for storeing a spare wheel and possibly some other bits of gear.

    Thanks in advance.

      Hi diesel82

Posted this reply to a PM from a PP member recently, sure he wont mind me cutting and pasting my response.

"Yes it is an ARB rack, very happy with it as it is as solid as you could want. It is the ARB 'roofrack cage delux with mesh 1790' for $588, plus Prado fit kit $120, plus installation $63.

It has made packing so much easier. We use a Bushranger RoofSack and a couple of ratchet straps, and the whole lot stays nice and tight. "

Obviously this rack is not made specifically for a tinnie, but it would be easy enough to make a bracket to suit.

Cant comment on the tracklander roofrack.

          Nice looking rack there, Lofty.

If I was to buy again, I would probably go the ARB rack too.

Mind you, there's nothing wrong with my Rhino - but it might create a little more drag because of its tray shape up top.

Personally hard to go past the Jarram Tracklander. The quality is brilliant, though at a cost. We also use a Michelles Sac roofrack bag which is very effective

The Jarram Tracklander is a great roof rack but the accessories they make to fit the rack are rubbish. I've taken to making my own brackets.

I also have an ARB deluxe roof rack. As lofty said they are very solid but also fairly heavy (approx 50kg). ARB use the same basket for the 100 and 200 series cruisers. I have a Michelles Sacs 1.2x1.8 Rac Sac.

Only down side of the steel roof racks on the Prado is the weight, as the Prados only have a roof carrying capacity of 100kgs including the roof racks weight.

That's right - Cruisers have a roof load limit of 200kg's.

 Are you sure about the weight of the ARB rack?? Only leaves 50kg to spare! A decent muddie on a steel rim would get you almost to this.

I was thinking to get an ARB rack but now maybe not....

I've just taken my Thule cross bars off my current Subaru Outback, so hopefully they fit the new beast otherwise off to ebay they go to fund a new set.

Agreed, am i right in thinking that the roof load limit is when the vehicle is driving, ie what the roof will support in and accident. I believe that the stationary load limit is much higher. I was told by the ARB guy that i could easily stand on the rack to load and unload, i weigh just the wrong side of 100kg.

I dont think i would want to do that on an alloy rack. The bracketing that secures this rack to the roof is curved to fit the profile of the gutters, it spreads the load really well, as in Kevins pic.

No problem at all wandering around on the alloy Rhino racks, I do it all the time when I'm loading it, tough as nails, just doesnt rust
