am i right in thinking that the roof load limit is when the vehicle is driving,

Correct, it's to do with roll over risk. The Prado has a higher center of gravity when compared to just about every other 4wd on the market.

Add to much weight up top and you won't pass the ADR slalom test!!!

My 85 odd kilos doesn't seem to bother the Rhino tray.

I have the aero bars that sacrifice a few kilos in load rating to the Heavy Duty Rhino cross bars.

Yes, static load limits on the roof are considerably higher than the rating for a moving (bouncing over corrugations) vehicle.

i dont know what the load limit is while the vehicle is not moving but while under way the way they work it is at 100kmh you cant put anymore than 100kg up there because it puts a hell of a lot of pressure on the roof, but one would think a roof tent and a roof rack and 2 adults could be around 200kg when not moving, something to think about

I use a Rhino platform rack chosen for its light weight and low profile. The heavy duty bars came first and then the rack was added later. See

              http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCa...m-Racks_6.aspx

So far I have been very happy with the Rhino products as they are well made and have the advantage of being modular. No trouble for someone light to stand on the bars.

I usually don't carry anything heavy on the rack so it works for me.

Looks like a great idea - should also help cut down on extra wind drag (and on fuel consumption), I imagine.

Mike, (or anyone else for that matter)

What did that platform rack setup cost all up in the end?

ON the Rhino rack website, they have Jerry holders etc. Obviously they all cross-fit into this platform?

What do you think of them, so far? All good?

                          Hi BooyaMedic

Retail prices for all Rhino gear can be found at http://www.rhinorack.com.au. I just had a look and noticed that the prices have gone up since I last visited.

I started with just three heavy duty bars and the fitting kit - RLCP (1250mm) $410 (10% off) and a shovel holder $40 from my local 4WD shop earlier this year. This setup was used for a trip along the Darling River in Western NSW and worked really well carrying a tent and other gear (see http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?t=3174.

A few months ago I noticed a 20% off sale at the local Auto One shop so I ordered in the platform rack (PR1811) and fitting kit (HP35) for $360 along with a large luggage bag for $240. Very happy with the service as the sale was really only for stock in the shop. I tried the rack on a trip to Canberra and again it did everything that I wanted.

Noise-wise the platform rack is a bit more noticeable than the the bars by themselves (which I found very quiet) but still pretty muted overall. As far as I know the accessories will fit but I can only confirm the shovel holder.

If you have the time find out the local shops that stock Rhino gear and wait for a sale then do the install yourself .

I fabricated my own rack made of standard profiles (ITEM) and DIY legs.

The car is now 1.99m high incl. rack, OME suspension and 265/70.

                                Thanks Chippi!

It's not that difficult to fabricate this. The profiles are standard parts from a company called ITEM and are bolted together. They have slots for sliding blocks which allow you to fix everything you need, i.e. the checkered plates, sand ladders or cans. Over here in Germany you pay around 16 AU$ per Meter.

The tricky thing is the legs because they are angled in long/lat direction. I made them from 20x8mm solid steel (base) on which a 20x30 square tube is welded. They fit neatly into the slots in the roof where they are fixed with 2x 8mm Allen screws. A rubber grommets keeps water from getting in. On top I welded a 40x8mm plate on which the rack itself sits.

The aluminium rack is anodized, the legs are powdercoated. All screws are stainless steel. Where needed the screws are countersunk.

                                Wolfgang
