The reason I asked is because you mentioned it bowed. I use 3 bars, from memory 1350mm (will fit a landcruiser aswell and I can stand on it when loading stuff and no problems. I suppose the centre bar gives that much more added strength in the middle section .

To tell you the truth Dustie the payload was well and truly over the 100kg mark when they had flex in them! whoops!

But yes you're right, the more bars the better at distributing the load.

I was in ARB today and bought the Rhino Rack shovel holder bracket. It fits perfectly, so it looks like Toyota source the crossbars from Rhino

On to my roof rails I've installed 2 Thule Aerobars ($189) and Rhino Platform rack - carried 80 kg across Simpson Desert - no movement, no bowing. Good as gold.

My two cents worth - have the factory rails on an 06 GX Ltd and yes they are great to hang onto when you wash the roof. I got the Toyota cross bars for $245 and fitted a Rola Vortex luggage rack, into which a small size southern cross canvas bag fits neatly. With the rack only weighing about 10 kgs I reckon it disciplines me to pack lightly (and neatly) on the roof. The aero style bars are not noisy at all if you set them back as far as you can and remember to fit that little end piece unde the end of the bar between the fitting point and the end cap.
I have a reasonable photo for anyone interested.

Re: Roof Rails - any crossbar options?

I know this is an old topic but fyi I fitted Rola cross bars. They are an oval shape, fit between the rails, not on top. Cant remember what the rating is, I think 80kgs. I bolted a roof basket from Rhino on them when we went to Fraser and they carried a pile of gear with no bowing or bendind and are rock solid.

I agree that they are great for that. Sure Toyota must have been thinking the same thing, as surely they would have put something else up there if they wanted you to carry something on top.

Yeah, they want you to buy their cross bars to put on the factory rails so that you spend more money with them, which is what I ended up doing, the set up I have is pretty good (and quiet) it'll hold about 60 kg of gear, which is fine by me as I would prefer not to put more than that on the roof. (still handy for washing the car too....)

Re: Roof Rails - any crossbar options?

I like this option, booga solid feel to them. Get the hangoff rails for cleaning, strength from the bars and a good mounting area for the easy-awn and fishing rod holders yet to go on. Only a little bit of sound at 100kms, fits great under 2.1m carparks, but the test will be iff I can keep a roof basket/rack on it permantly, might need to go for the slimline basket to go on top. But really happy with this.

Re: Roof Rails - any crossbar options?

I looked at the Rhino Rail Mount SXB series cross rails in their showroom today. This is in view of fitting either a roof pod or basket and bag. Can anyone please offer comment on the roof pods. Are they dust/waterproof. Also I would like comment on the Rhino steel mesh roof basket and Rhino luggage bags. Again how are the bags for dust/waterproof. It is alright to state this in literature but I would like real world experience.

                          TIA.

As you can see I have these bars here Heavy Duty CXB
My Roof POD is the Pro Probox 420

On the HD racks, at 110kms you could hardly here it, compared to having just the racks on, basically a tad noisier thats all.
With the back rail, you push it hard up against the corner of the factory side rail. Then on the instructions for the POD, its got a recomended minimum distance to have the other rail for support. I stretched it about 70mm further to bring the front rail closer to the front of the pod.
I had 5 x full sports bags, the shoulder variety like this

They had at least 15kg + in each one, also a similar backpack full of shoes, a small fold out chair, and a dirty clothes black bin bag around the same size as the back pack.
The POD is rated to 50kgs, as you can see, I majorly went over it. Not a problem, the floor is ribbed north south air channels, with alloy supports and holes every 15mm or so along those two main channels. This allows mounting manouverability. THe pod locks with a key at the back, so standing on tailgate step is awsome for reach.
The front is held by two pivotle arms that folder into each other n closing and is hinged. Once open fully it can stay there in the open position. Careful though on a windy day it twists and turns but is very strong. They are not dust proof, I got a small collection of dust from the east west trip and about 5 bees, yes they died in the process. I will be going to Clark Rubber down the road from me and buying a small strip of either insertion rubber or foam to put around 4 metres long and glueing it to the lid Then its dust proof, the way its made it is totally water proof but to aid to this, once you have mounted your pod on the roof, mark next to the holes on the inside that your pod mounts too, then take it off and seal the rest of the mounting holes. I used a strip of sticky back velcro (the smooth side) and all the holes are then sealed against water run off from your roof and dust coming up from underneath. The good thing is, you cannot lock your keys in the pod, its needs the keys in there to close and lock, you cannot take the keys out without closing it. Good idea.

The POD takes 10 mins to setup and line up correctly using u - bolts either for HD or Aero rails and it comes with these, with twist knobs for tightning. I put flat washer with a spring washer under the front two mounts, call me paranoid hah.

Takes about 5 mins to take off too, very easy. Just have to make a mount now for the garage wall to store it when not in use, basically hang it like a picture using the existing mount holes by using the other ubolts I didnt use, just p-clamp them to he wall.

I am also in the process of buying a TJM or ARB deluxe rack for the roof for permanant mounting. The Pod can then be mounted onto the rack and secured for waterproof and dust proof travelling then, leaving you room in the front or back depeding on mount position for tents, gas bottles etc. I saw a prado with this setup in Ceduna, looked awsome, but didnt have my bloody camera haha. Depending on which rack I get will determine if my existing setup will go. The POD will stay though. My rails and bars may be up for sale then, we'll see.

                            Hope this helps you mate.

Looking forward to your comments and pics on the pod mounted to a rack.
