  • Rear Recovery Points

    OK

After doing the design for the front recovery points.........based on Samo's drawing, I thought maybe the same principle could be aplied to the rear.

The following design is for information only, if you construct them, you do so at your own risk. The design has not been built, has not been tested and has not been rated

I am supplying the design so we can discuss whether or not it would work.

Can you get 12mm thick angle ... or does this design rely on joining 2 bits of plate ???

I like the idea of picking up the existing holes in the chassis rail ..... and offsetting the eye ... as the exhaust pipe sits in the way.

    Cheers

no idea if you can get 12mm angle, would be nice.

I suppose you could always heat and bend plate to shape, no idea what this would do to the metal.

the only welding i would hope is the triangular stiffening section, again do not know if this would be required, but it does sort of call out to be there.

              just for some more fun

here are two 3d renders of what they would look like.........sort of, well at least enough to give an idea anyway

These renders are in no way to scale, still learning how to control the 3d program.

                Rear Recovery Points

Ok, after having some time away, and getting some other projects out of the road, I thought I might revisit the design for the Rear Recovery Points.

The new design, again I have it in VSD format for those with Visio, also in a large JPG format for those who just want to print it.

Recovery point made up out of ply, Did this so I could see if it would fit and how it would look.

As you can see, It now takes the point away from the exhaust, allowing a shackle to be fitted. In the pics the bolt holes are not lined up, the whole unit moves another 5-10mm towards the fuel tank, ran out of bolts and had to use 100m/h tape to hold it up.

My preferance would be to make one for the exhaust side and use a ready made recovery hook on the passanger side, that way you could rig the equaliser strap to the drivers side and leave it up out of the road, bringing it down and hooking on the passanger side only when needed.

Would make it easier in the dark to hook up.

                anyway.......comments, thoughts etc

Hot exhaust + hooking up may lead to issues....

Buy a Towbar, then you have a nice central recovery from the centre of the car.

                      Rear Recovery Points

                      Hi Hutch

Have a towbar, just don't like the idea of snatching from a central point if I can spread the weight across two points.

                        Rear Recovery Points

                        HI team Piggy

The idea would be to shackle on the equaliser strap and pull it up tight and out of the road, then use a hook on the other side to connect to when you need it.

It would seem that no matter what we do on the drivers side, we are always going to have a problem with the exhust pipe. really think they should redesign how the exhust pipe comes out the back, maybe offset it!
                        just a thought

If its a decent tow bar the load is distributed across both of the chassis rails though...

The towbar is bolted on both sides so that makes it an even weight spread across the vehicle with a central pull point like using an equalizer strap.

True, except I still have the toyota bolt on.

looking at new tyres, 2" lift etc before replacing towbar......the only thing I tow is my light arse camper trailer, so convincing the other halve that I need a new towbar is not going to work

This is more a work around to the problem
