  • warn/tabor 9k winch question

do you guys have any opinions/advise re. warn/tabor magnum 9k budget winch? is it any good?

my local 4x4 shop/dealer (UK) is recommending this winch for my occasional off-roading and recovery. http://www.warn.com/truck/winches/src/tabor_9k.shtml.

I don't think I will use this winch very often but would like to play with it every now and then when off road (4-6 times per year max) ....the plan would be to install it in a discrete location behind the front bumper....something like this:

anyway, shall I try tabor or fork some more dough for a proper warn gear....what do you say?

have you tried the search button.
thought it had be discussed previously.
anywho, their are a few members with repco (autoparts), chinese winches
as they ain't used too often.
so any reasonable quality winch is better than none.
the fitment looks ok, but it looks better with a bullbar

but it looks better with a bullbar[/quote]

I left the UK 4 years ago and as far as i can remember youre not allowed bull bars any more over there.
I think it was due to kids / pedestrians getting killed by them in a collision.
They had to start replacing them with the rubber style ones.
Please correct me if im wrong.

the front grill protection or bull bar/a-bar law in EU and UK specifically is not very clear indeed. Some say that you can still install a-bars on the cars first registered before 2007, others say you are not allowed to fit them anymore. Toyota dealers do not sell them at all, some 4x4 shops still carry them but not for long I was told.... Insurance companies do not even want to hear about bull bars at all.

The fact of the matter is that according to our home grown eco-terrorists having a 4x4 in UK seems to be a moral 'offense' already but having a bull bar fitted makes you feel like a criminal behind the wheel or worse...;-))

I've had a magnum winch fitted for about 2.5 years, only had to use it once, so far so good.
I think if you keep the maintenance up to them they should last forever.

hmm....you used it once during 2.5 years....I am afraid that I may end up in the same rare usage category....I am wondering if this is worth the hassle to install it in the first place?

                    Tabor Winch experience

I have a Tabor 9K and it has worked wonders with my Prado 2007. I have used it at several outback trips in sticky mud in red clay hills and to pull out stuck mates.
