  • ICOM 440 UHF radio

I am in the market for a new UHF radio and am being told by sales people that the ICOM 440 has excellent reliability and features. Can members with an ICOM 440 indicate if it is a good radio and worth the extra money.

I have 4 Icom radios and they are all great. (207, 208, T90A and IC7000 for the nerds out there).

None of them are the 440 though. I have heard that they are a robust bit of kit.

I have never had a problem with my Icom gear.

I had a 440 fitted about 3 months ago. Unlike the IC400pro you can not boost power.

It is a basic unit but built tough as with most icom products.

The handset is big as it includes a mike, speaker and controls. I have the head unit fitted into the CD changer space in the glove box, there is heaps of length in the cables, bit of an overkill with the power leads though. Unfortunately the connector cable is to short to mount on the cargo barrier but extensions are available.

Originally I did not get the handset mounted, but it was getting damaged bouncing around and most of the time it was upsidedown and it was difficult to hear, (same as the GME 3420/40 without external speaker) so I screwed the dash  I tried the double sided tape thing but the extra weight in the handset left no other option.

Have you seen uniden's offering as they have brought out the UH400 and 500 version with a complete remote head now, around the $400 but built wise I would still go the Icom
"Ooops I just deleted the internet, lucky I was able to recover 99.7% of it out of the bin"

Gday JohK, I would be sticking with the GME TX3440 at this stage, it is a proven thing, Im in the industry and I havent even actually laid eyes on the new Icom yet ! Im with Strahan in that I also have plenty of " hobby" Icoms, The IC400pro UHF was/is also a great radio so I see no dramas with the new one except it is an all new radio, unlike the IC400pro, the new radio is not based on a high power commercial radio, so the radio body is substantially smaller in size. This is only my thoughts though !! Im as keen as anyone else to see how it goes in the real world............

Thanks Strahan, Clifton, Spurio and speedcomm for replying. Sounds like none of you have an issue with ICOM. I like the 440 but am a little concerned with the size of the hand piece - it does appear large and may cause a possible mounting issue. I am still tossing up between the GME 3440 and the ICOM 440 but if I can figure how to mound the hand piece successfully I will go for a 440.

                  Mate,
I am no UHF guru, but why would you get the 440 when you can get the (more powerful?) 400pro with an aerial for less money?

I have a Icom 400 pro mounted in the space where the dash ashtray used to be - it took a bit of bravery to start cutting, but it fits like it was made for it, and if you are careful you do not need to remove the cigarette lighter.

In that spot the dial is easy to read, and the microphone bracket is screwed into the dash just to the left of the streering column, and the mike can be used while on the bracket.

Unobtrusive, and works like a champion. Great unit.

                  cheers, Tony

Installing mine tomorrow - fingers crossed. The handheld is excellent too. Cant say the same for the inane chatter on the airwaves in Sydney though!

Comes down to what suits you best. I run 4 of the Icom 400 pro's and have never had an issue so I can vouch for them. I do require commercial capabilities so that counts most other radios out especially in that price range. You can't beat the value for money with the 400 pro. Uniden & GME seem to be good reliable units for general use.

Good reason to become an amateur or ham radio nerd.

Was so impressed with the ICOM 440 I bought one. The hand piece wasn't as large as I thought.

Now comes the installation. I plan to mount the radio on the steering bracket similar to speedcomm and the hand piece below the air vent similar to Schaffer. I can't bring myself to drill holes in the plastic yet.

One question? I don't have a bull bar and plan to mount the antenna (RF Industries CD900 series) on a GME trunk bracket on the left hand guard. It looks like it going to wobble quite a bit and vibrate against the bonnet and guard. Any tips on mounting?

                              Cheers John
