  • Anyone tried a rear spolier from ebay?

I've been thinking about getting one of these rear spoliers with built in stop light:

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... &rd=1&rd=1

The Toyota genuine article, once its painted and fitted, runs to around $800 according to my dealer - seems excessive for a "bit of plastic".

Wondering how similar the ebay item is to the real McCoy - anyone had any experience with such things?

Does the rear spolier actually create any down force or is it just for looks?

Purely looks - however, it does serve the useful function of keeping the rear window clear of dust/dirt.

I don't think downforce is really an issue on 2+ tonnes of metal travelling at sub 120km/h speeds...

Thought as much, I've heard that most spoilers are effective at speeds closer to 200km/h

I have thought about one of those, purely for the effect of keeping dust off the back window. are they really that effective?

Mate has one on his VX and it doesnt seem to keep dust off the back window.

Your prado will start to look like a Pajero with one of them

The one in the picture is only for looks.

It will have no effect with regard to keeping dust off the window because it deflects wind away from the back window (infact, it'll probably make it worse - see below). The dust that accrues on the back window comes from underneath the car at the back and from the back wheels, and the only effective way of minimising that is to deflect clean air onto the glass. That's the aim of the factory dust deflector, and it works quite well (I have one). If you can find an aftermarket one of similar design, you might save a bob or 2.

A spoiler on a prado is a waste of time (and your good money). I can't think of a reason why we'd need something to apply a downforce at the back of our cars unless we're racing them on a track   I've never seen a prado's rear end get airborne yet  Bearing in mind how much they weigh.

                Agree with John.

The spoiler that Grandeman is referring to is just a fancy piece of painted plastic for looks....however.....the dust deflector which looks quite different and is in a tinted perspex colour is actually quite useful. It deflects clean air from the roof area down over the rear window and reduces the amount of dust that is normally sucked back on the the flat rear of the car due to the it's shape.

It does not remove all dust but I have driven the same roads with other Prados who don't have one fitted and the difference is noticable. You still get a thin layer of dust, but it tends to not accumulate on the window as per normal when the dust deflector is fitted.

If you want to spend you money on something, go with the deflector not the spoiler.

                Regards Ross

All interesting info on the wind deflector - thanks. Just a few questions:

                  1) What's the asking price around the traps (fitted)?

                  2) Does it generate wind noise (whistling)?

                  3) How resistant is it to car washes?

I may never buy another accessory again for fear of turning the chariot into a Wanker (sorry, er, I mean Pajero ).

Compare a prado with the rear spoiler to a pajero rear spoiler, almost identical! ops:

                      Gidday Grandeman,

I can't remember what mine cost. Less than a hundred (from vague memory, I think).

No noise whatsoever. I get almost no dust on the back window and hardly have to use the rear wiper/washer.

I get my Prado washed at a local hand wash place. So far so good. Dunno about those automatic ones that scratch your paint. They'll probably scratch perspex, too

                          Grandeman,
I have had mine through brushless carwashes heaps of times and a brushed one once and never had a problem.

I must say the car washes really stuff the alloy on your bullbar...take the shine away. But the dust deflector is fine.

                          Regards

Bloody hell - I use the brushless car wash all the time.

Will it really take the shine off my bar? Yikes!
