I purchased and installed one of the new Uniden UH-400SX RM at the weekend. It replaces my GME TX3440 which I installed in mid-2007, and although a great radio it was too small (both the microphone and display) and too cumbersome to use and operate for my needs.
I looked long and hard at the Icom IC-440 (which is very similar as the Uniden) but too many functions require software to program, which is annoying if you need to change something when out and about. I also found the display on the Icom a lot duller in sunlight and the radio cannot be used without the controller mic attached. Plus you can basically by 2 Unidens for the price of the Icom (which is very over-priced in my opinion).
- The Uniden UH-400SX RM installed in place of the GME.
- The previous GME TX3440.
I used the same mounting location for the Uniden as I had for the GME, which was under the centre console on the drivers side, just near the footwell.
The main advantage of the Uniden over the GME (and the Icom) is that the controller mic is not required to use the radio. All the radios functions are replicated on the front of the radio (which is a normal UH-400SX), so if the controller mic gets damaged you can plug in the basic microphone (which is included) and keep using the radio like a normal non-remote mic CB.
Another advantage is the speaker on the microphone, which makes conversations much easier to hear and means the volume does not need to be as loud so there is less distorsion.
The extra receive channels are also easy to program - one function I could never properly grasp on the GME.
The build quality looks fine - and while I know people will always have an opinion of one brand over another I can say that the Uniden looks, feels and operates the same as the GME in regards to quality.
The only disadvantage to me of the Uniden over the GME is that the Uniden does not have selcall - but I don't know anybody that uses it anyway. Plus it can't be used to display the battery volts, but I've got a seperate volt meter for that anyway.
I've used it now for a couple of days and all in all it's shaping up to be a great radio.
