  • roof consoles vs dash pods

    G'day all,

Been trawling through all the posts, and found nothing well one close but no cigar.

I am tossing up between a overhead centre console or a dash pod. Don't like the idea of drillling holes into a new vehicle making it look like a shower head rose

I need to fit up two radios (both commercial units) one will UHF (450-527 mHz) with 476-477 mhz programmed in plus work related freqs. 2nd VHF 66-88 for private use, rallies BFB etc.

My concerns with the overhead option I'm a tall bugger 6' 2-3 thereabouts and having a console near my head ready to bash my brains out everytime I move my head is a bit disconcerting. Plus visbility looking left is also a concern.

Dash pod - its bit of a stretch to reach the mics as I sit backwards rather than forwards (size issue again) plus how would it be secured down I would want it to be a bit more than velcro tape and double sided tape.

    Any suggestions ideas appreciated

    Cheers

    Dean,
I am about the same height as you and have an overhead console. Yes I did scone the old noggin a couple of times when I first got it, but I haven't done it for a while now. I actually find the drivers side grab handle to be more annoying. I haven't really noticed the visibility to the left to be any worse. I make sure I keep the mic cords up out of the way.

Using the internal rear view mirror needs some adjusting to, as with mine the mirror has to be adjusted as low as possible to see past the console.

It does make the driving position feel a bit more cramped, I took mine out a couple of months ago to chase down some rattles and it made a huge difference to feeling of spaciousness in the cabin.

    Cheers,
    Kevin

      Hi kev,

Thanks for the info - glad my forseen issues are another persons problems.

Slightly off topic, with the drivers side grab handle, I had it removed, it does leave a couple of biggish holes. Which have been filled in by a couple of suitable low profile bolts - would have preferred a couple of plastic trim plugs, cant have everything i suppose :|

When we put ours in for the Free 1000 KM service I asked them to remove the drivers handle for the same reason. When we got it back the handle was removed and in the center console with the screws back in the holes. I was a little disappointed as I could have easily done this, I was hoping Toyota would have provided some blanking plugs.

Watching this thread with interests as I am not sure if I should go down the roof console or dash pod path myself.

        Cheers neil

No worries. I will be back in civilization tomorrow night, so I can take some photos to illustrate some of the issues. I wouldn't call them problems, just takes some adjusting to.
