  • Hi-lift Jack and Winch Kit

    Hi There

Does anyone have one? Has anyone used one in a recovery situation? I don't want to spend $$$$$$$$'s on a winch bar and electric winch just yet, so I was wondering what peoples thoughts are on the Hi lift jack and the winch kit that is available.

Appreciate your feedback if you have any.

    Cheers

I gather you are talking about the winching attachment to fit to the hi lift?

They work for usre, but are bloody tedious! You can only move the car a foot or so at a time!! A hand winch is probably a better bet.

The winch kit I'm talking about lets you winch the vehicle about 5 metres before you have to chock the wheels and reset the winch.

      Theres a crowd here:

      http://www.4wdbits.co.nz

that sells them. There may be a similar type of product available in Oz.

No chance, hi-lifts are dangerous, I wouldn't ever use one for winching

Sorry but that's a bit of a broad statement.

I could kill someone with a 1st aid kit too...

Why this statement? Any particular examples where it was the high lift fault?
I've used high lifts jacks a zillion times and as long as you know where there's a possible danger, they're fine.
I haven't used the system but I would like to know more too as I'm in the same boat.
I have seen a demo in one of the 4wd action or 4x4 Australia mags some time back and I think they were able to winch more than a few metres by adjusting the chain somehow.

I want to know if the kit will fit my Jackall high lift jack???
While we're at it, will the lift mate (that uses the spokes of your wheel) work with a jackall?

I would've almost given my left kidney for the winch system a few weeks back at 2:00AM!

Re: Hi-lift Jack and Winch Kit

There's a reason why companies make hand and electric winches, use the right tool for the job. Sure you can use a hi-lift properly when you have time or when you're fencing but at 2am in the morning when you are stuck and your mate is on the hi-lift and you're in the cab driving, that's a recipe for disaster. Recovery is serioulsy dangerous work with huge loads and forces at play. I don't even like using shackles when winching as the less metal the better. Each to their own but I think there are much safer ways to recover a vehicle.

Re: Hi-lift Jack and Winch Kit

Hi Snappa - a high lift jack can be useful in some situations and I guess the winch kit for the jack might be useful as a last resort but I sure wouldn't want to be counting on this as my main winching tool. There's a lot of chain there in that kit which won't be light either. Why not consider a reasonable quality hand winch. It'll pull you way more than 5 meters with a lot more inherent safety and it really won't cost too much more than the hi lift jack winch kit.

I remember seeing a hand winch that used a drag chain instead of a wire rope (tirfor). It was only a small unit but could easily pull out a 4WD. Not sure of the name but it was something like Bulldog.

I think you might be referring to the Mud Mauler. Made in Queensland (I think) and it looks like a very neat idea, very small, light and apparently effective. I've never seen one in the metal but its not too hard to find some reviews and user comments on the net.
