Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

I agree with AJ120 and D4D regarding accessories and carrying capacity. Do check these and see how they fare against what you intend to carry.

In my experience, accessories for Thule bars is nearly zero. Rola is not too bad but they have dropped the ball and got overtaken by Rhino. However, the saving grace for Rola is that some of the Rhino accessories are compatible with Rola. According to the roof rack shop, Rhino has made the effort to make accessories to suit Rola as well, thus making them the number one roof rack company here (if not for all cars, at least for 4WDs).

If you are just carrying surfboards or the odd plank from Bunnings, then they would probably do you fine. Being of an aerodynamic shape, they can be left on the roof without much loss in fuel economy.

OK, i am working my way backwards trying to work out the weight of what i might put on the roof in order to decide on which bars to get. Can anyone tell me with any accuracy (plenty of people are willing to give me a wild guess) what a rhino aluminium 1500 x 1010 roof rack weighs. There is nothing on thier web site and ARB cant tell me.

You might have to call RhinoRack HQ direct. The desk jockeys are very helpful and knowledgeable. In the past, they have gone to the shelf to physically measure things up for me.

I now have one of the last sets of Rhino HD bars left in Brisbane - installed this afternoon - two tinnies and around an hour and a bit. Will have to pick up my game on the tinnnies per hour ratio !!

What are second hand Prado rails worth ? Can someone give me a price - will probably flog on evilbay.

Just thought i'd give a heads up that the Toyo HD bars are still available, but by the way they were talking may become hard to come by. I picked mine up this arvo. Paid $310 for them. The rhino bars were 510 RRP so very happy. Putting them and the cage on my GXL on the weekend ;-)

Ripas, I think that I paid $180 for a brand new 'second hand" set earlier this year. I thus had 4 Toyota bars on the roof rails and this was perfectly adequate to hold up a roof cage and a steel spare wheel and tyre on the Canning in June with no problems. The trick is to tape the nuts on so the corrugations do'nt rattle them off. Neil

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

                  Hi Neil,

I'm currently looking at roof rack/bar options for my 120 series with factory roof rails and i'm interested in the 4 bar setup you have.
Am I correct in thinking you have used the H/D bars and if so how did you get them level on the factory rails? Was it with the use of leveling spacers that rhino now have for use with their H/D bars? I currently have two rhino sportz bars fitted but they do not make leveling spacers for them that would enable a third bar (sportz) to be fitted on the factory rails.
I was out on the Canning Stock Route for 3 weeks around the end of June/beginning of July this year in a newish Pajero (work vechicle) that had 3 H/D rhino bars with a Rhino rack on top. Luckly the factory rails on the Pajero gave an almost flat set up with no leveling spacers required.
What size basket and length bars did you use?
I have a quandry as I'm looking to buy an RV5 oztent but it is to long, at 2m, to fit into most baskets or racks. So I was planning on using slightly longer bars so I can sit it along side a basket fitted to the factory rails - not sure how this would work with over hang for the RV5 though .
I know that Rhino make a narrow basket to take the RV5 but it does not leave room for anything else and I'm not sure how it would go fitted on bars mounted to the factory rails any how.
I might just have to bit the bullet, remove the factory rails and buy a suitable full length alloy rack as the simplest option.

                  Cheers,
                  Al

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

Al , they are just the bog standard Toyota bars [not HD] but 4 of them instead of 2. One is at the back and one at the front, each near the join in the rail. The other 2 are evenly spaced between. They actually make a flat surface for the basket which I think is 1.2 m long by 1 m wide but I will measure it tomorrow and let you know if it is different. As I said they gave no trouble and didn't move or loosen [ the tape on the basket brackets is the trick.]All up weight of the basket was ,I think, about 15 kg for the basket and brackets, 35 kg for steel wheel and tyre, 2 or 3 kg for the extra 2 bars and 2 or 3 kg for the original 2 bars ieapprox. 55 kg. 11000 km trip with 6000 km on dirt.Neil

                        Hi Neil,

Thanks very much for taking the trouble to reply with some details, it is appreciated.
Must say I'm surprised you managed to get all four bars levelled given the "apparent" curvature of the factory rails.
Do your standard Toyota bars equate to the Rhino Sportz bar? I had a play with some bits and pieces off a Rhino display board a while back but could not get a level surface using 3 bars - you have done well.
I've made a few more enquires since my post the other day and I'm planning on having a look a one of Jaram's opened Tracklander alloy racks on monday. It is designed to mount on to the factory north/south rails using Rhino CXB or SXB bar mounts. It is 1.8 metres long and 1.25 metres wide, so wll fit an Oztent RV5 with a 100 mm over hand each end. If I go for this option, I will also up grade by SXB mounts to the stronger CXB ones that have 2 clamping screws. This way I will also be able to use the large Bush Ranger Rack sack I have.

                        Cheers,

Al, I think the standard Toyota bars are the same as the Rino bars [ and cheaper] and yes, the resulting surface with 4 evenly -spaced bars is flat or so close as not to matter. There may be less than 1 cm in it and the rubber strips on the 4 bars easily accounted for this. Neil

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

Visited the folk at Jaram today and ordered one of their open ended Tracklander alloy racks designed to clamp onto the factory north/south rails using rhino mounting legs. Size is 1.8m x 1.25m.

This rack can be fitted with a range of different legs to suit rails, tracks or gutters making it suitable for use on different vechicles that I may purchase into the future. I have also purchased a set of heavy duty Rhino leg mounts (CXB) with the double clamping screws instead of using the standard mounts (SXB - single clamping screw) that came with my Sportz bars.

I will end up with about 400mm over hang on the rack from the mounting points at each end but that should be OK if I put the heavier stuff in the middle. The rack looks nice and solid with all touch points on the mesh floor welded and has a very durable looking hammer tone powder coat paint finish.

One of the extra benefits of this rack is the that Rhino make a custom bracket for attaching things like a fox wing or roll out sun awning. But don't tell the missus

Should be able to pick it up next week. Will post a couple of pics for reference later.

                            Cheers,

I won some HD rhino bars on eBay the other day for $50, they were the same length as the aero bars I currently have, 1130mm. However the HD bracket is a different deisgn and the bars are too short to fit on the Prado hence you need the 1250 long bars.

When I was investigating how to pull off the roof rails, I discovered that the center part of the rail is a C-section. So you could make up your own angle (structural aluminium angle) and bolt it into a nut bar that you slide into the C-section and held captive there.

the kayaks are 4.6 metres long
the distance between my racks on the pajero is 1.30m

the length of my bars is 1.38m to fit the 2 kayaks upside down.

I wonder how odd it would look to keep the rails and add a single rack up the front ? this could be removed when not needed.

                                Hi guys,

Just picked up on this thread and it seems keza has a similar problem to me. I have the Toyota roof rails on my Grande which provide a maximum length between the bars of about 1 metre (front to back). If I replace them with the three bar set I will get about 1.4 between the front and rear bar. I am wanting to get a kayak of about 5.0 metres so ideally I should have about 1.6-1.7 between the bars. Can a bar be fitted further forward than the front mounting point for the standard rails, and if so what sort of bar is best and how is it attached??
